Your house is talking to you, listen up! Here are 3 signs it's time to repaint the exterior, and why each one matters.
Paint is cracking or peeling. This usually means moisture is getting underneath the paint film, either from the inside (bathroom or kitchen humidity pushing through the walls) or from the outside (rain getting behind loose caulking or trim). Once paint starts lifting, bare wood is exposed to the elements, and that's when real damage starts, not just cosmetic damage.
Colors look faded or chalky. That chalky residue you might notice on your hand after touching the siding is the paint's binder breaking down from UV exposure. It's not just fading, it's the paint losing its ability to actually protect the wood or siding underneath. At that point it's not doing its job anymore, even if it still looks okay from the street.
You're seeing moisture or mold spots. Dark spots or discoloration, especially in shaded areas or near gutters, usually point to trapped moisture. This can mean a failing seal somewhere, poor drainage, or paint that's too old to breathe properly anymore. Left alone, this is exactly how wood rot starts.
None of these mean something is wrong overnight, but they're your home telling you it's time. Catching it early always costs less than waiting until it's a bigger repair.
