Your roof is only as strong as what it’s built on.

Most homeowners focus on the shingles or tile they can see — but one of the most important parts of your roof is underneath: the decking.

Roof decking is the solid wood layer your entire roofing system sits on. When it’s strong, dry, and structurally sound, your roof has a solid foundation that can handle Arizona’s extreme weather.

In Scottsdale, roof decking must meet current building code requirements. A common standard for residential roofs is 7/16” OSB or plywood when properly rated and installed. Some roofs, especially tile roofs or engineered conditions, may require thicker decking or additional review.

If the decking is soft, rotten, brittle, or water-damaged, even a brand-new roof on top may not perform the way it should.

At Pivot Roofing, we thoroughly inspect the decking during every replacement. Any damaged wood is addressed before the new roof goes on — because strong decking means a stronger, longer-lasting roof.
