Liebig's Law of the Minimum
Liebig's Law of the minimum states that growth and yield is limited by the scarcest nutrient required by plant growth. Increasing other available nutrients did not increase growth, but applying the nutrient that was lacking did.
This is why soil tests are so critical. They are the only way to find out what your soil is lacking and how much is necessary to bring it to the critical levels necessary for plant growth.
