We celebrate the life of Rick Sundberg, FAIA (1942 to 2026) — as both an extraordinary architect whose vision shaped so many spaces around us, but also for the mentor, collaborator, and (beneath the sometimes crusty exterior), the deeply generous friend we all knew.

Rick had a rare gift. He didn’t just build structures; he built communities. He understood that architecture, at its core, is about the people who inhabit and use it. He listened deeply, laughed easily, and pushed everyone around him to think bigger and to design with more intention and rigor, but to never take yourself too seriously.

His legacy is rendered in wood, concrete, and light across the Pacific Northwest; it’s equally rendered in the generations of architects he mentored, the deep friendships he maintained, and the quiet spaces he created for people to connect. Rick showed us that you can be brilliant without being ostentatious, and that the most enduring structures are the relationships we build along the way.

We will miss his wit, his wisdom, and his wry spirit. Rest in peace, Rick.

A memorial will be held for Rick this October. To learn more about Rick’s life and share your stories & memories, visit: www.ricksundberg.com/

Celebrating 5+ years of GBA in Bellingham! 🎉

Located in downtown Vashon, the new Vashon Maury Community Food Bank (Vashon Community Food Bank) is a purpose-built food bank designed to be a visible, accessible hub combining grocery-style food access with community support services. Visit the 🔗 in bio to see new photos of the recently completed project.

This week, the project was featured in the : “In keeping with the food bank’s mission, Graham Baba says the design of the new facility is centered on providing a “dignified and equitable environment.” The shopping experience is modeled on grocery stores, and the design pulls from the architect’s years of experience designing market halls, grocery stores, and retail spaces,” writes Emma Lapworth. At St. Joseph’s Early Learning Center, we transformed a previously dark structure with minimal openings into a vibrant space that gently draws in natural light through full-height windows and doors. Inside, custom cubbies, specialized shelving, and a new playground have been thoughtfully scaled and arranged, creating a space that feels welcoming and right-sized for the Center’s mission.

Check out concepts from our recent feasibility study for the Nisqually Pump House. Several years ago, the Nisqually Tribe regained possession of a natural spring that was a source of medicinal water for their elders. It had been used as a water source for the City of Olympia for many years and had the access restricted. Working with Swenson Say Faget and Rider Levett Bucknall RLB, GBA studied how to adapt the municipal pump house that sits over the natural spring and support reconnecting the people to the water. The concept study included cleaning up the site to protect the water from contamination, as well as options for using the building to host gatherings for celebration and education.

Summertime at Wenatchee Riverfront Park 🌿 Nestled just east of Wenatchee Downtown Association, GBA designed the open-air pavilion, new public restrooms, and a mechanical room addition — creating welcoming spaces that support everything from everyday recreation to community gatherings. With direct access to the Apple Capital Loop Trail and the Columbia River, these additions help strengthen the park as a vibrant gathering place for the community.

Checking out Assembly Art Fair taking place at West Canal Yards, an adaptive reuse project designed by GBA that transforms a former fish processing and freezer facility into flexible, light-filled spaces for makers and maritime uses along Seattle’s Ship Canal.

On view through this Sunday, “in place of a conventional booth layout, Assembly unfolds as a series of exhibitions; each gallery with its own unique space, allowing for intimate encounters with art and meaningful dialogue between artists, curators, and collectors.” Link in bio.
