From renders to reality ✨

Deep in the woods of Maple Falls is Timber Shop, an open-air woodworking space that readapts an existing concrete foundation and stem wall from a pre-existing garden shed. The framing structure was built from local timber include wood sourced and milled directly on-site. The approach eliminated the need for ground disturbance, minimize new material use, and reduces landfill waste.

Details + textures at Suburb House

The Suburb House leans into its suburban context. Rather than treating the American suburb as a backdrop to be ignored, the design reframes its most familiar elements--the forms, materials, and spatial conventions--as opportunities for reinventions. The started by utilizing the existing foundation from a 1959 rambler as the basis for this expanded rebuild.

Drawing inspiration from the mid-20th century photography of Robert Adams, the project reconsiders the everyday landscape of suburbia, transforming their often overlooked qualities through careful composition and clarity of form. Familiar materials such as fiber-cement lap siding are elevated through attention to proportion, detailing and the play of light.

At the same time, the design advances a model for drastically improved performance from the expected suburban home.

The small details at the Silver Residence.

The Silver Residence is a mountain retreat from the city for an extended family. The home was designed as an arrangement of different building, with each serving separate functions. The home's communal spaces are located in the large wooden building reminiscent of nearby wooden barns. The more private functions of the house are located in more contemporary corrugated volumes, situated as additions toward the forest. These two halves of the home are mediated by a white wall that runs the length of the building.

Tucked into a glade of towering trees is Char Box, a residential sauna framed by a view into the forest. The design draws from the scorched mountainsides of northeastern Oregon, where wildfires once swept through the valleys and left their mark on the land. Taking visual cues from the charred trees left behind, Char Box is wrapped in a darkened exterior — but step inside, and it opens into warmth, rich color, and the fragrant scent of cedar.

Our clients approached us to design a covered entrance for their home, which had no protection over their front door when they purchased the home. They requested that the new structure blend into the existing landscape and maximize light into the home. We designed a gateway to the home comprised of two main components: a steel structural frame and a mirror-finished suspended canopy. This strategy gave us an unobstructed plane that we turned into a pool of reflection when clad in mirror-finished stainless steel. These surfaces effectively bounce natural light into the home's interior and "paint" the entry with its surroundings.
