A strong connection to place and neighbors is what allows communities to thrive.

The architecture of Links Yale seeks to foster that connection in multiple ways in order to build a strong community. By emphasizing the shared space between homes rather than turning away from it, residents are given a space to share, gather, and come together in meaningful ways. By addressing the prevalence of outdoor recreation among Seattleites and accommodating for that, residents are given a chance to better understand their neighbors and potentially develop new friendships based around shared interests or finding new ones. And finally, by creating historical ties to the history of this city and its connection to the sailing industry, residents can feel more connected to a vital part of this city’s identity and sense of place.

Ashworth Hudson was a special project for our office and we are excited to share it with you today.
Sited in Seattle's historic Colombia City neighborhood the significance of maintaining community character and aesthetics was a vital part of this project. Not only was the need to maintain community character necessitated by the city's preservation standards but the neighborhood is one which holds significance to us and our office personally, since just down the street from the project site is the office space where JWA got its start on Hudson Street.
The design team tried to create a project which echoed the characteristics of the surrounding neighborhood and re interpret them in a modern way to fit in and maintain character without conforming to it. Overall, our office was very happy with the result of the design team and it turns out so were the residents of this neighborhood. With one neighbor taking to writing our office a letter which reads...

"I am a Columbia City resident... I drove by one of your projects on South Hudson and wanted to thank you for designing a beautiful development that fits into the character of the neighborhood, has a roof line, and color…. we need more designs like this…. Thank you for your creativity.”

Perched atop a steep slope in Ballard, the custom design of our Shilshole Bay project keeps the stunning waterfront view in mind. Seamlessly connecting natural materials throughout the interior and exterior of the home, the design possesses a modern, minimalistic feel. The architecture incorporates contemporary details, clean lines, and an open floor plan to elevate views of the bay at every level of the project.

Hiawatha D. is an artist, poet, and longtime resident of the Central District in Seattle. Drawing inspiration from Black life in a modern world, Hiawatha employs rich color palettes and cubistic elements of design to show African Americans transcending historical, societal, racial and economic challenges in America and around the world.

Hiawatha’s piece, “Quartier Latin,” inspired the color palette for the exterior of our recent project in the Central District. For us, the project represents a small step towards equitable investment opportunities, and the building of generational wealth for established property owners historically pushed out of their neighborhoods. Connecting Hiawatha’s art to our architecture was a nod to the power and transcendence of Black people that Hiawatha’s work represents.
