Hinge Studio Architecture + Design

Hinge Studio Architecture + Design Hinge Studio is a woman owned architecture practice specializing in adaptive reuse of existing spaces h i n g e .

The word hinge implies a shifting or moving while maintaining a connection. This idea reflects how Hinge Studio approaches architecture and the design of space. We believe that the best solutions are anchored. The thing that connects us to a space can vary greatly perhaps a sense of place or history, an existing structure or material, a person or community. No matter what it is, the more we celebrate connections, the richer the experience.

We designed the DeLille Cellars tasting room to mimic the experience of a great wine: layered, complex, and full of discovery. 🥂

Using a palette of blackened steel, warm wood, and gold accents, we created a vertical journey that draws guests from the public tasting floor up to the exclusive wine club levels.

High design doesn't always require an unlimited budget—it requires focus. We prioritized custom details like the mountain-inspired wine storage to make every square inch count.

Proof that good design drives results. 🚲

For the 400 sf retail renovation we did a few years back, our goal was to organize the chaos without losing the "soul" of this incredible non-profit.

Using simple plywood, slat walls, and modular storage for those iconic milk crates, we made every inch work harder. We adored helping Bike Works further their mission of youth empowerment and bike equity.

From massive furnaces to whimsical finishes. 🎨

We transformed 15,000 sf of industrial space into a sanctuary for glass blowing and design. This project was a true meeting of the minds—working alongside artist and client Piper O’Neill allowed us to blend Hinge’s love for salvaged materials with her unique, whimsical vision.

The result? A hot shop and office space that’s as inspiring as the art created within it.

People often ask us what our favorite part of the job is. The site visits? The blueprints? Honestly... it’s the "consultants" with cold noses. 🐾

We have a special place in our hearts for our veterinary and shelter clients. Designing for animal health requires a deep dive into durability, workflow, and stress reduction (for both the pets and their humans). Every facility we design is a chance to expand our knowledge on how architecture can better serve our furry friends.

How do you turn a massive industrial steel tank farm into an elegant three-level tasting experience? You celebrate the bones. 🍷

For the headquarters, we salvaged the original Red Hook brewery framework and inserted a "Northwest Jewel Box." By painting the heavy I-beams white and layering in French-inspired textures, we created a space that feels both grounded and airy.

There is something irreplaceable about a historic building. 🏛️ We are head over heels for the Chestnut Ridge Casino Building.

Between the classic brickwork and those powerful exposed beams, you can feel the history in the walls. We love looking for those "quiet moments" in the design—the little details where you can tell a craftsman took an extra hour just to make it special. They truly don’t build them like this anymore.

Architecture is a long-game of stewardship and adaptation. ⛪️ Since 2019, we’ve been working with Christ Episcopal Church to evolve their historic Seattle space. What started as a master plan for a new organ evolved during the pandemic into a focused, high-impact mission: making the sanctuary fully accessible to all.

The highlight? Our founder, Kate Cudney, is hand-crafting a sculptural cross from the original pews to hang above the congregation—a literal bridging of the church’s history and its future.

From the first sketch to the final move-in, there is nothing quite like seeing a project come to life.

Our team recently headed up to Camano Island to visit a recently completed home and see how our clients have truly made the space their own. Witnessing the transition from blueprints and job sites to morning coffee and lived-in comfort is the ultimate reward. Seeing the light hit the rooms and the space functioning exactly as intended reminds us why we do what we do—designing the backdrop for our clients' lives.

At Hinge Studio, our commitment to adaptive reuse doesn’t stop at the architecture—it flows into every interior detail. For our latest food and beverage project, we’ve been sourcing second-use pieces that bring a level of soul and personality you just can’t find in a catalog.

Since physical samples aren’t an option when buying vintage or reclaimed, we get creative with our visualization process to show our clients exactly how these "found" treasures will anchor their space. It’s an opportunity for us to pour a little extra love into the process, ensuring every chair and light fixture has a story to tell. 🪑🎨
