Hinge Studio Architecture + Design

Hinge Studio Architecture + Design Hinge Studio is a woman owned architecture practice specializing in adaptive reuse of existing spaces h i n g e .

The word hinge implies a shifting or moving while maintaining a connection. This idea reflects how Hinge Studio approaches architecture and the design of space. We believe that the best solutions are anchored. The thing that connects us to a space can vary greatly perhaps a sense of place or history, an existing structure or material, a person or community. No matter what it is, the more we celebrate connections, the richer the experience.

From the first sketch to the final move-in, there is nothing quite like seeing a project come to life.

Our team recently headed up to Camano Island to visit a recently completed home and see how our clients have truly made the space their own. Witnessing the transition from blueprints and job sites to morning coffee and lived-in comfort is the ultimate reward. Seeing the light hit the rooms and the space functioning exactly as intended reminds us why we do what we do—designing the backdrop for our clients' lives.

At Hinge Studio, our commitment to adaptive reuse doesn’t stop at the architecture—it flows into every interior detail. For our latest food and beverage project, we’ve been sourcing second-use pieces that bring a level of soul and personality you just can’t find in a catalog.

Since physical samples aren’t an option when buying vintage or reclaimed, we get creative with our visualization process to show our clients exactly how these "found" treasures will anchor their space. It’s an opportunity for us to pour a little extra love into the process, ensuring every chair and light fixture has a story to tell. 🪑🎨

Our team retreat led us to the enchanting Rockland Woods, a sanctuary designed for artists and thinkers. From the diverse range of accommodations to the intricate craftsmanship of the on-site treehouse, every corner of the property felt like a masterclass in creative intentionality. Walking the grounds was the perfect reminder that great design should always live in harmony with its environment.

Coming soon: A look into the heart of Hinge Studio. ✨

We recently traveled to Wenatchee to film a mini-doc featuring a project that sits at the very core of our values. It was a powerful experience to reconnect with our clients on this spectacular property and, in the same breath, revisit one of our founder Kate’s most personal and meaningful early works. This trip wasn't just about architecture; it was a chance to reflect on our journey and the enduring impact of thoughtful design. Stay tuned for the full story. 🎥

We recently traded the studio for the serenity of the Peninsula. Taking a few days to step into nature allowed us to reflect on our firm’s vision and align our personal goals for the year ahead.

At Hinge Studio, we believe the best transitions happen with intention. With this time to reflect, we’ve caught our breath, found our focus, and are ready to keep moving forward.

The Donum Estate reminds us that architecture can transcend shelter—it can frame the landscape, choreograph movement, and heighten awareness. Art and architecture here merge into one spatial language, where the viewer becomes part of the work itself. This is design as experience, as dialogue, as place.

The kitchen became the heart of this renovation—and the key to unlocking the home’s stunning Sound views. By relocating an awkward powder room, the space opened up to reveal a cook’s dream: a generous island, full-height storage, and seamless flow to the dining area.

From a jewel-box powder room to a built-in entry bench and a fully finished basement, every move was intentional. The result? A warm, functional home designed around how the homeowners truly live.

Inside Donum sits a monumental tapestry by Ghanaian artist El Anatsui, woven from discarded alcohol wrappers. His work transforms industrial waste into shimmering textile-like surfaces that reflect light, labor, and global trade.

At Hinge Studio, we’re inspired by this approach to adaptive reuse—reframing discarded materials as sources of beauty, meaning, and sustainability. Like Anatsui, we see design as an act of renewal: reimagining what already exists to build a more conscious future.

Perched above the Sound in West Seattle, this early-1900s home had the views and the charm—but not the layout to match. Cramped spaces, an unfinished basement, and closed-off rooms kept it from reaching its full potential.

By rethinking how every square foot was used (without adding any), the homeowners—working closely with Hinge Studio—transformed the home into one that finally lives as beautifully as it looks.

Come get cozy. During the holiday season, we’re drawn back to the spaces that feel like home—whether they’re the ones we live in every day, made a little more magical this time of year, or new spaces taking shape. At Hinge, we design warm, layered environments that reflect our clients and invite connection, comfort, and the making of memories.
