At the 2026 VECA Women in Leadership Retreat, 25 women from across the company came together to connect, learn, and invest in themselves. Representing a variety of roles, responsibilities, experiences, and stages of life, the retreat provided a meaningful opportunity to step away from daily demands and focus on personal and professional growth.

As part of our commitment to Empowering Each Other to Succeed, attendees participated in workshops and discussions facilitated by Resources Northwest on communication styles, active listening, self-value, navigating burnout, and building supportive relationships.

One of the most impactful takeaways was recognizing that our differences are strengths. Through honest conversations and shared experiences, attendees left feeling energized, empowered, and more connected to one another.

And while there was plenty of learning, there was also plenty of laughter. The evening Bunco game quickly turned into some spirited (and surprisingly competitive!) fun, creating memories and connections that will last well beyond the retreat.

A special thank you to Meg Winch, Sara Halicki, and Erika Behrends from Communication Resources Northwest, along with our own Laura Rannow, for making this year's retreat such a success.

Throwback Thursday 📸 | Celebrating 80 Years of VECA

In 1946, brothers Bruce and Jeff Pavey, plus several fellow veterans, returned home from World War II with a shared vision. Having worked in the electrical field before and during the war, they founded the Veterans Electrical Contractors Association — a company built on quality, driven by value, and anchored by trust.

That legacy became VECA Electric and Technologies.

These photos from the archives capture an important chapter in that story — Tom Fairbanks, Executive Chairman, alongside Bruce and Jeff, whose leadership helped shape VECA’s early years.

In 1989, Tom Fairbanks purchased the company when VECA had just 40 employees. Over the next 37 years, VECA has grown into one of the Northwest’s leading electrical and technology contractors, now employing more than 2,000 people.

As Tom shared, “I think to be driven by values, you have to understand values aren’t something you reach for that you wish you had. They are who you are.”

80 years later, we’re proud to continue the legacy built by our founders by delivering the quality and value our project partners have come to expect.

Shannon Raybold has been part of the VECA team for a little over a year and serves as a Business Analyst based in Seattle. Her work focuses on process mapping, continuous improvement, problem solving, and AI integration to help support VECA’s growth and scalability.

“I enjoy diving into the details with different teams to identify efficiencies and create clear process maps that keep everyone aligned and make it easier to onboard new team members quickly. Coming from outside a construction background has actually been an advantage—it allows me to ask fresh questions and approach challenges from a different perspective.”

Shannon brings a thoughtful, collaborative approach to her work and values understanding how each role contributes to the bigger picture across the company.

Outside of work, Shannon enjoys exploring a variety of creative outlets including building live-edge and epoxy tables, painting, gardening, and experimenting with new artistic mediums.

We appreciate the curiosity, creativity, and process-focused mindset Shannon brings to VECA every day.

During Construction Safety Week at our University of Washington Haggett Hall project, Andersen Construction surprised VECA General Foreman Ryan Dossman with an award recognizing his “Exceptional Safety Performance.”

This recognition reflects the kind of leadership Ryan brings to the job every day. He leads his crews, mentors apprentices, and communicates across the project team with safety at the forefront of every decision.

As Andersen shared during the presentation, Ryan is currently leading a workforce made up of roughly 31% apprentices while maintaining zero reportable injuries on the project. On a project as large and complex as the UW Haggett Hall Demolition and Replacement Project — a nine-story, 230,000-square-foot facility that will house approximately 800 University of Washington students — that level of leadership, coordination, and proactive communication makes a significant impact across the jobsite.

“Ryan consistently works in a way that promotes a safe and cooperative work environment. He communicates clearly with crew members, looks out for the well-being of others, and helps ensure that work is completed with attention to safety expectations. His team-first mindset contributes to better coordination in the field and helps reinforce a culture where people watch out for one another.”
— Ken Carlson | Senior Project Manager

“Ryan is an exceptional leader who guides his crew with professionalism, experience, and a strong commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards. His ability to keep crews safe, organized, and on schedule has earned him respect among all trades on the project. His tireless efforts contribute to both the well-being of his crew and the strong safety culture across the jobsite.”
— Abdul Rahman Akbary | Associate Project Manager

Ryan’s leadership reflects the standard we strive for at VECA — planning ahead, supporting the people around you, and making sure everyone goes home safe.

Congratulations, Ryan, on this well-earned recognition, and thank you to Andersen Construction for highlighting the importance of proactive safety leadership in the field.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives while serving our country. Their courage and commitment to protecting the freedoms we enjoy today deserve our deepest respect and gratitude.

At VECA, we are proud to support veterans and military families, and we remain grateful for all who have served our nation.

From all of us at VECA, we wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day as we remember those who gave everything for our country.

Looking back at Mental Health Awareness Week is an important reminder that awareness matters, but action matters too.

In construction, mental health deserves serious attention. Tight deadlines, long hours, heavy workloads, travel, burnout, and the pressure to “just push through” can take a real toll. That’s why open conversations, support, and a culture where people feel safe asking for help are so important.

At VECA, we want to continue building a workplace where people feel supported. Checking in on a coworker should be normal, and asking for help should always be met with respect.

If you’re struggling, reach out. If someone on your team doesn’t seem like themselves, take a moment to ask how they’re doing. Mental health impacts all of us, and sometimes a simple conversation can make a real difference.

Need immediate support? Call or text 988 anytime to connect with the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

Let’s continue moving mental health conversations forward and make support part of how we look out for one another every day.

Congratulations to VECA’s 2025–2026 UW NECA Superintendent Course graduates: Venny Fefelov, Tristan Lang, Robert Hammond, and Troy Kelly.

This course is a significant commitment and an important investment in field leadership. Throughout the program, participants completed training focused on leadership and motivational skills, communication, customer relations, project management, scheduling, cost control, Lean Construction, sustainability, BIM modeling, and more.

Programs like this help strengthen the skills needed to lead successful projects, support teams in the field, and continue raising the standard across our industry.

We’re proud of the dedication these individuals showed throughout the course and appreciate their commitment to continued growth and development as leaders at VECA.

Thank you as well to Chapman and Bromiley for attending the graduation and supporting this milestone.
