Just north of Seattle, this family home is tucked away on a magical parcel of land within the Edmonds city limits. Designed to maximize the site’s breathtaking views, it is carefully sited to blend into its wooded setting while opening fully to expansive views.

Much of the light-filled interior is wrapped in clear-finished fir, giving it a warm glow even on rainy winter days. White oak cabinets and black soapstone countertops add warmth to the kitchen.

The floor plan is highly efficient, carefully tuned to the family’s daily routines. Each room is exactly suited to its purpose, yet no larger than needed.

L A N D S C A P E D E S I G N — Corten steel planters, formal gardens, terraces, and wood decks hover above a meadow landscape, extending the gradient between indoors and outdoors.

Both the landscape and hardscape elements were designed as a unified composition, with hand-placed attention to detail throughout the gardens.

INDOOR-OUTDOOR CONNECTION The pavilion scheme of Greenwood Garden Home is completely connected to its landscape. The kitchen, dining area, and living space link to the front, side, and backyard gardens with a variety of thoughtfully placed openings. A dry garden on the street and raised beds for veggies and herbs can be accessed by the kitchen door as well as the front entrance. A northwest garden with native perennials fills the backyard.

“From our very first meeting and every meeting thereafter, we worked with our clients to integrate their gardening goals with their architectural goals. The results are stunning! This home, located on a compact urban lot, connects to carefully planned garden spaces on three sides - without sacrificing privacy.” — Tim Hammer, architect

The abundant natural light and views of greenery work to both elevate and expand this home’s modest footprint.

The SEATTLE DAILY JOURNAL OF COMMERCE wrote this great story about the redevelopment of Nəxʷq’íyt (“Noo-kayet”) Point. This project marks the return of the ancestral village of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe to its native people.

(No Paywall – Thank you, DJC!) Written by Nina Milligan.

Part of a decades-long environmental restoration of Port Gamble Bay, this project transforms a site once dominated by a 19th-century sawmill into a place that celebrates renewal—ecological, cultural, and communal.
