Firecracker, LLC Gardens for the urban habitat

Thanks to the most chill, patient clients ever. I met these folks before I got sick in the fall of 2024, and they’ve been nothing but kind and patient while I was laid up for way too long. But spring is here and the new garden is in just in time for warm sunny days and nights by the fire. Here’s to summer fun for this family!

New patios, new pathways are making their way. Bike shed, fire wood storage, trellises, lights and plants are still to come in this little garden. So much more usable space now for this family.

The bunnies seem to have finally discovered this lush pile of Sesleria, and a few other clumps in the garden. Here’s to successfully fending them off, so this summer I only have to contend with the dog chilling in the garden. Wish me luck!

Sending video updates of progress to clients, ignore my pointing. When getting called in to refresh another designer’s work, especially when the client is mostly happy with the garden, we work hard to maintain design integrity. We are making a few changes to the plant palette and updating a little bit of hardscape to meet the client’s current needs. Hopefully when we are done, it still feels like the old garden, but with a fresh new twist for the future.

The world is heavy right now, full of genocide, assaults on democracy and humanity across the globe. My job is to bring peace and beauty to people’s lives. It seems trivial when folks are getting gunned down and murdered on our streets, captured and taken to concentration camps or deported from America. Most everyone who knows me is aware I spent the earlier part of my career in public policy. Politics used to bring me such joy and happiness, and a paycheck before I shifted to landscape design. Election days were my Super Bowl. I went to graduate school in the Twin Cities, and some of my oldest dearest, friends are under siege right now, something imagine unimaginable to most Minnesotans and heartbreaking to see from afar.

it’s way past time for everyone to get involved in helping our friends and neighbors. There’s a lane for everyone, no matter your skill set or capacity. If you need help finding resources, no matter where you live, please ask me and I’ll get you there. March in protests, give money to local mutual aid groups, be that pesky person calling your elected officials on speed dial, adopt a corner and help folks that are truly afraid for their lives right now. There’s so many ways to step up, but we won’t be able to preserve any semblance of democracy left if people standby and wait for someone else to take action. It’s up to all of us, I hope you join me in fighting the good fight.

2025 has been a year I’m ready to leave behind. Even with endless help and kindness from friends, family, clients and colleagues, battling long COVID for over a year has been one of the hardest things I’ve had to contend with thus far. I worked much less than I hoped, as my brain and body would not cooperate for most of the year. I managed to get published a bit (thank you to those reporters who highlighted my work). I gave a talk to one local horticulture club and have another one scheduled for the new year. I managed to eke out a few new designs and make some updates to older projects, too. Here’s to a new year of fun designs my brain is more than ready to tackle!

We are in a continued government shutdown, health insurance premiums are about to spike, SNAP benefits are ending in a matter of days, and groceries are about to jump in costs because of it. If ANY of my current or former Seattle clients have food they want to donate to a local food bank, please get in touch between 10/28-11/25. I will pick up your donation and take it to Food Lifeline. Get in touch with me, and let’s all help our neighbors.
