Getting your roof replaced this year? Ask one question before the crew starts.
"What will this roof score on a wind mitigation inspection?"
Here's why it matters. Florida requires insurance companies to give you a discount for certain wind resistant features on your home. An inspector comes out, fills out a form, and checks boxes. Every box you can check is money off your premium, and for a lot of homeowners it's not a small amount.
Four of those boxes get decided the day your roof goes on:
๐น How the roof deck is nailed down. Nail size and spacing.
๐น How the roof is tied to the walls. Clips versus single wraps versus double wraps. This one moves the needle the most.
๐น Whether there's a sealed water barrier under the shingles.
๐น Whether the covering meets current Florida Building Code.
Here's the part that stings. If those don't get handled during the install, you can't add them later without pulling the roof off again. We've seen folks pay for a beautiful new roof and then find out at renewal that they got no insurance credit for any of it. That's a rough phone call to be on.
So ask. Ask us, ask whoever you're hiring, but ask before the first shingle goes down. A roofer working in Florida in 2026 should be able to answer that without hesitating.
And get the wind mit inspection done after the job. Most people make the cost back on the first renewal.
