We are ON HOLD due to Woodpecker Nesting Season. The lot has some dead trees and City Of Sebastian has asked us to confirn there are no woodpeckers utilizing the cavities in the dead trees. Nesting Season runs April through September. We have our friends at Atlantic Environmental going out to the lot next week to do an inspection of those trees to determine the woodpecker status.
Woodpeckers, like most other song birds you see in your backyard, are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This means you can’t hurt, capture, or kill these birds, or disturb their active nests and eggs. The 3 woodpeckers that are likely using a tree in this area are:
· Red-bellied Woodpecker: Lays eggs from late March to early May. The clutch size is usually 3-5 eggs.
· Downy Woodpecker: Lays eggs from late March into May. Clutches typically range from 3-8 eggs.
· Red-headed Woodpecker: Lays eggs from April through July, often raising up to two broods. The clutch size is typically 3-10 eggs.
The eggs typically take 11 to 14 days to hatch and the young birds fledge in 20 to 30 days after hatching. Once these birds fledge, the nest would no longer be considered active and the tree could be taken down as long as no birds were in the tree cavity.
We should have an update next week- stay tuned !!!
