“Persinger Architects Intern Corner”
We are very proud of our Intern program here at the firm, and we take great pride in subsidizing very wonderful young people in our community. We had a new student take up our college intern seat last year, meet Kendra:

“Hello! My name is Kendra Updegraff. I was raised in a small agricultural town outside Sacramento, and came to the North Bay in 2016 to study at Sonoma State University. I joined the team at Persinger Architects and Associates in the beginning of 2020, a few months before graduating magma cm laude with a Bachelors of Arts in Biology and a minor in Physics. I’m extremely grateful that I took a chance on interning somewhere outside my realm of study, as I’ve learned many new skills I never would have experienced otherwise and gained the ability to see the world from a new perspective. Working at PAA has exposed me to the science of building design and the extensive process it takes for anything to be constructed. While working at an architect firm was never anticipated in any of my 5-year plans, over time my intentions grew past just being a short-term intern, and I’m excited to see where I go with Persinger Architects!“

The great thing about taking on a professional internship while in high school or college is that if you do plan do go into the engineering or architectural fields, every hour of interning counts towards those required on your eventual license requirements.
It better prepares students for college, and or real life jobs. It definitely looks great on college apps, financial aid apps, and we write great letters of recommendation and support for these amazing kids.
Their families have become dear friends, and we love hearing the path of each and every one of them along the years, and relish the smiles and stories every year of change, transition, and success.
Our first intern dates back nearly two decades to the year we opened our doors, who is now a lead engineer at a large Engineering firm downtown Santa Rosa, raising a beautiful family of his own.
Other interns from El Molino High, went on to gain 5 year full ride scholarships at Illinois Tech University, and now work in world renown firms in Chicago. Other interns Alexis was happy to support creative opportunities in our IT Dept, whereby they are off now having a blast and working hard, at Cornell.
And of course, one of our all time favorites overseeing our Operations and doing a magnificent job is Avery Kant, who began with us a sophomore at El Molino, went on to get his Architecture Degree at Cal Poly, and has been a smiling face at the helm of Persinger Architects ever since.
The blessings of investing in the young people in our community is one where the benefit lasts for generations, helping to provide direct resources to our local community, which in turn gifts families for generations to come. Best wishes to each and every one of them; we are so delighted to have Kendra on our team!

The three-span Burnside Bridge has been one of our favorite bridges in the Pacific NW with its lovely Italian Renaissance towers. It was the first Willamette River bridge in Portland designed with the help of an architect. Burnside's drawbridge opening mechanism, or bascule, was designed by Joseph Strauss (1870-1938), whose Golden Gate suspension bridge would open 11 years after Burnside – right here in the place we call home.
This week however, it’s our Very Favorite Bridge, for the stunning act of solidarity captured in this fantastic photo. Thousands lay with their hands behind their backs for nine minutes on June 2, 2020.

We were so dearly blessed, to be part of, and witness, so much shared intense love, and gratitude, for a truly magnificent person today, whose young life resembled nothing short of some human version of the butterfly affect on humanity, in the way that it might play out if we could only track an angel walking amidst us, as described by all, and so many, touched across the globe, by Duncan.

Duncan taught us all how to be our best selves, and how the best in us, was always reflected in him, in his seemingly boundless capacity for love and compassion.

What was extensively echoed by all, was the horrendous pain of losing him, while feeling unequivocally shattered, by what Duncan would have continued to gift this troubled, imperfect, modern world with, and the people in it, with his amazing, spectacular, and yet unforeseen contributions and ways...always inherently positive, profoundly intelligent, enriching, and life altering, in the best possible ways.

We will miss this incredible guy so much, and forever.

It’s an incalculable loss, and a genuine tragedy for all.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved friend, and employee, Duncan Brown.

Duncan was an Analy High, and subsequent Occidental College, graduate.
He gifted not only us with his exemplary talent and beautiful humanity, but also NASA, and countless other incredible endeavors.

While working for us full time, Duncan also managed to obtain his Masters Degree in Architecture, with the same zest and accolades that he was famous for in all he pursued.

Duncan came from a very loving, local family, consisting of himself, and his parents. His folks were amazing individuals; notable geologists and co-founders of a renown Santa Rosa engineering firm, and incredible longtime advocates for the Graton and Sebastopol communities.

Duncan is pictured here below, at the bottom of the stairs following a Mike Hauser Academy series that our office subsidizes every summer. He loved being a mentor and steward for younger students, and his enthusiasm, intelligence, compassion, patience, and willingness, was a genuine gift to all he touched.

Duncan was a Debate Team member through high school and early college. Aside from aero dynamics/science, he expressed Debate as one of the cornerstone life enriching activities that made him who he was.

We talked many hours of his debate and aero science adventures, accomplishments, and rumination therein...and we were always quite moved, by his amazing take-away from all those experiences.

Duncan never saw the downside in anyone, or any thing. He always saw the upside to any situation or person, no matter how seemingly faulty or troubled, that situation or person might be. He consistently distilled the best potential for each, no matter what. He was gifted with a very unique ability that way.

We happen to believe, Duncan was a tremendously, special, incredible, human being, and we dearly mourn the fact that this world has lost one of its finest angels, much too soon.

We will forever miss you, sweet, Duncan.
