Here's A Look At What's Blooming Now!

If you have followed this page for very long you know that the volunteer photographer (me) has a thing for flowers and raindrops. With the overnight rains Monday night I knew it was time to go and take a stroll through with my camera.

The gardens are popping with Iris in a wide variety of beautiful colors. The Peonies are coming on strong now with new blooms opening every day. Some of the Roses are opening up too.

If you can visit in person I encourage you to do so often. If that isn't an option stay tuned right here and enjoy the beauty from the comfort of your home.

The gardens are maintained by an all volunteer crew. New volunteers are always welcome. Work party information is posted on this page.

Peony season is almost in full bloom! We have an excellent collection of peonies in the Sequim Botanical Garden. We will be hosting a Peony Informational Workshop to explain some of the nuances of these beauties and tips to help you to grow them in your own garden. Saturday, May 23 at 10:00 AM we will gather in the garden to discuss the important growing issues and viewing the fabulous peonies in bloom. Also, the irises are in full bloom as well…so the garden is a blaze in color….so come to the garden and check it out! We would love to share it with you! 🌺🌸🌼

New to the garden this year are the giant Globemaster Alliums. Standing tall in the middle bottom tier, they are the largest purple balls on a single stem. Each ball has hundreds of tiny purple florets. Every family has its beauties. And yes, these are the best-looking members of the family of Allium, which includes onions, leeks and chives. (The word, Allium, means 'onion' in Latin.) When the blooms fade they remain on the stem and look like a starburst.

Attention all volunteers! We will be having 2 work parties this week as there is a lot to do! First one…Thursday, May 14 from 10:00-12:00. We need to continue deadheading the bulb plants, spreading out another dose of Sluggo, and digging out the phlox and repotting to eliminate it from the garden and offer up to the public for donations. On Saturday, May 16 from 10:00-12:00 we will be spreading some fancy mulch in the new garden for a natural look and for moisture and w**d control. We will also be placing a few smaller rocks amongst the new garden to further create a natural landscape. And there is also the ever present w**ding. The goal is to mulch all of the gardens (except the lavender and possibly the dahlias) to retain moisture and prevent w**ds. This will take some time and effort, but will help with our labor in the garden tremendously. If you can make one or both dates, that would be great! The garden is looking wonderful thanks to everyone’s hard work. 🌺🌸🪻🌻🌷👏👏

Blooming in the garden now is the strikingly beautiful “Basket of Gold” (alyssum saxatile). It is a low growing evergreen perennial that blooms in the spring for 4-6 weeks and is particularly attractive in rock gardens as you see in our garden. It is drought tolerant and prefers full sun. Once established, it looks wonderful as a border plant and will act as a beautiful ground cover even after the flowers have faded. Basket of Gold grows in evergreen mounds—6-12” tall and spreads 12-18” and is deer resistant.
