When Should I Paint What?
In Sequim and Port Angeles, it's pretty obvious when to paint your exterior. We can generally paint outside from the beginning of May to the end of October. If we get lucky, maybe you get a few weeks on either end.

What about interior? A lot of people like to paint their interior during the summer months because it's less inconvenient during good weather.

Counter to that, there's actually a very good reason to paint your interior from November to April. The main reason is, this is the slow paint seasons in our area.

Most painters bid things out at a lower rate during those months. If you wait to paint your interior in that time frame, you will safely save $5 or $10 per labor hour. When you consider that labor is usually your largest expense, that can add up to $500, $1,000 or even more depending on the size of the project.

So if you're trying to manage your budget in the face of large home painting projects, paint your interior in the winter and save some money.

Recently, I was working for a customer that wanted to upgrade the interior of their house. They decided to stain tongue groove boards and cover the ceilings. Now, mind you that this probably wouldn't work so well in a small house, but this was a large spacious house with vaulted ceilings.

The first project was to find the right stain for the project. We went through eight different samples and some products required as much as a wood treatment, two coats of stain, and four coat of clear finish. That's seven coats of various different products! That's a lot of product and even more labor. We settled on a one coat specialty product that was expensive, but we only used about four or five gallons. Comparatively, it was a fraction of the cost of the situation above.

Now that the project's finished, the interior looks stunning. It worked really well with their dark kitchen cabinetry and light counter tops. This is not an inexpensive project for someone to do, but the net result was excellent!
