Here at KDS Handyman and Yard's we are always searching for natural and non toxic ways to help keep your gardens and yards pest free and in tip top shape. I have heard that praying mantis are great at keeping the mosquitos and other pests away from your property so that your garden and flowers stay happy, healthy, and beautiful all summer long. We have decided to test their effectiveness in our personal garden and just ordered several Ootheca's (praying mantis egg pods) to release after they hatch. In addition to the praying mantis ootheca we also ordered several caterpillars that we will watch transform into butterflies with our children. This experiment is also going to be an amazing learning experience on life cycles (and many other lessons) for our children. What chemical free pest control methods have you tried?

*I have added some of the information I found regarding praying mantis below*

Mantids are territorial stalkers of insects. They will spend days waiting and tracking their prey. The praying mantis moves its head to keep its prey in sight. Its head stimulates special receptors that send out nerve impulses that instantly adjust the distance and angle of the mantis quick strike. It delivers a bite to the neck, killing the insect and then savors the meal. That's how they work. The praying mantis is an awesome, showy creature and can help to control garden insect pests the organic way. They are also very interesting to have around. Each mantis egg case will hatch out 50-200 mantids. When hatching, the young crawl from between tiny flaps in the egg case and hang from silken threads about 2 inches below the case. After drying out, the young will disperse.m Attach the egg cases to a twig or plant. 2 egg cases per 3,000 sq. ft. Pesticides and even wetting agents and spreader-stickers may adversely affect mantids survival. Broad spectrum and systemic insecticides are toxic to praying mantids. Praying Mantis will not eat your ladybugs, so you can use these two good bugs together to protect your plants.

Would you love to have a bat home in your yard? Bats are so helpful with controlling mosquito and other bug populations without having to use all of the toxic chemicals that are usually used.
