The Gruber-Latimer crew repointed the brickwork on the “clock tower” building in Williamsport (MD). The building, originally a meeting space and theater, was gifted by the Order of the Knights of Pythias in 1908. Like many early 20th century buildings, the front façade is covered with smooth brickwork and thin elegant mortar joints.

This historic farmhouse sits perched on a stone outcropping outside Sharpsburg (MD). The dry-laid retaining stone wall in front of the house – which holds the ridgeline soil in place – had succumbed to the destructive combination of groundhogs and tree roots. Part of the wall had collapsed when the owner called on Gruber-Latimer put it back together. The crew repaired the failing part of the wall and tied it more securely into the hillside.

What appears to be stonework on a building – both historic and modern – is often “precast concrete.” This cost-effective solution gives the appearance of expensive decorative elements at a fraction of the price. Concrete, though, does not always have the durability of stone, especially on older buildings where the metal reinforcements rust and expand. Luckily, skilled precast fabricators can match nearly any design, like this 19th century example from a Gruber-Latimer project in Halltown (WV).

This floor led from the cobblestone street into a rope merchant’s store along the Fells Point waterfront in Baltimore. During the building’s conversion to a restaurant, Gruber-Latimer was hired to smooth out the wagon ruts by re-laying the floor – with each stone returned to its original location.

A falling tree destroyed the parapet on a 19th century plantation law office in Martinsburg (WV). Gruber-Latimer’s crew was able to salvage key historic building material – and add some from our inventory – to put it back together.

Sometimes Gruber-Latimer is called on to stabilize ruins – in this case the ruins of a barn just up the hill from a farmhouse in Washington County (MD). The restored stone walls invoke a sense history while making for a warm and inviting extension of the garden.

What appears to be a simple chimney cap is actually a study in good stewardship of an old building. Located in Martinsburg (WV), this out-of-use chimney sits high atop a 19th century commercial building. The owner wanted to protect the chimney from weather and animals, each of which was taking its toll. Balancing practicality with reversibility, this flagstone solution will last decades with little maintenance. And yet, a future owner interested in restoring the chimney can remove the cap with a few taps of a hammer. Further, slightly raising the flagstone and venting the flues reduces the risk of condensation in the chimney that could otherwise eat away at the brickwork from the inside.

St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Little Orleans (MD), circa 1860, is linked with St. Peter’s in Hancock (MD) and the Irish labors who built the C&O Canal. (Note the stained glass shamrock in the church’s front gable.) Their presence along the Potomac swelled the ranks of Catholic worshipers in Western Maryland in the middle of the 19th century. Gruber-Latimer’s restored part of St. Peter’s exterior, including a sinking corner of the church’s sacristy.
