🌳🍂 YOUR TREES ARE GETTING READY FOR WINTER. BUT ARE THEIR ROOTS?

Eastern Shore homeowners, here's something you might not realize about fall tree care!

While we're enjoying the cooler weather, our trees may still be dealing with the effects of months of dry conditions.

Parts of Maryland's Eastern Shore have experienced moderate drought conditions this year.
🍁 HERE'S WHAT MANY HOMEOWNERS OVERLOOK:

Just because your trees are losing their leaves doesn't mean they no longer need attention!

🌳 ROOT HEALTH MATTERS!

Trees depend on healthy root systems to absorb moisture and nutrients, support growth, and maintain stability.

When soil conditions are excessively dry, trees can experience additional stress, especially younger trees and those with compromised root systems.

🌳 3 THINGS YOU CAN DO THIS FALL:

✅ Check soil moisture. Don't assume cooler temperatures mean adequate moisture. Check the soil several inches below the surface before watering.

✅ Protect the root zone. A properly maintained 2–3-inch layer of organic mulch helps conserve soil moisture and regulate soil temperatures. Keep mulch away from the trunk!

✅ Pay attention to changes. Premature leaf drop, canopy thinning, and branch dieback can indicate underlying stress. These symptoms can have several causes, so identifying the actual problem matters.

⚠️ HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART!

Not every declining tree needs to be removed.

Sometimes corrective pruning, improved growing conditions, or addressing an underlying issue can help preserve a valuable tree.

Other times, significant structural defects, advanced decay, or declining health may warrant a more detailed evaluation to determine whether removal is appropriate.

Knowing the difference is where professional arboricultural knowledge matters.

At THAT Tree Guy LLC, we focus on identifying concerns before they become bigger problems.

🍂 Fall is an excellent opportunity to evaluate your trees, address appropriate pruning needs, and plan ahead for winter.

Healthy trees start with healthy roots. Don't wait until there's a visible problem to start paying attention!

🌿 Those vines climbing your tree may look harmless—but they can slowly contribute to its decline and death.

Aggressive vines such as English ivy, wisteria and bittersweet can:

⚠️ Compete with the tree for water and nutrients
⚠️ Cover foliage and reduce available sunlight
⚠️ Wrap tightly around stems and restrict growth
⚠️ Add weight and wind resistance to the canopy
⚠️ Conceal cracks, cavities, decay and dead branches

Over time, this added stress can weaken the tree and increase the chance of limb or whole-tree failure.

Do not pull heavy vines from overhead—they may be supporting dead limbs or could bring branches down with them.

Protect your trees before invasive growth takes over.

🌳💨 NOT ALL TREE PROBLEMS START WITH A STORM!

🍂 Here's something many homeowners overlook:

Trees still carrying much of their foliage can experience significant wind loading. When branches are already overextended, poorly attached, or structurally compromised, strong winds can expose weaknesses that have been developing for years.

Three things worth knowing before the next round of windy weather:

🌳 1. More pruning isn't always better. Proper structural pruning can reduce certain risks, but excessive thinning, topping, and improper cuts can create additional problems.

🌳 2. Branch attachment matters. Large, competing stems with included bark may have weaker connections than properly formed branch unions. These defects aren't always obvious from the ground.

🌳 3. Tree health and structural stability aren't the same thing. A tree can have a full, green canopy and still contain defects that warrant professional evaluation.

⚠️ The goal isn't to remove every tree that could become a problem. It's to identify risks early and determine the appropriate course of action.

At THAT Tree Guy LLC, we believe proactive tree care starts with understanding the tree, not automatically reaching for a chainsaw.

Whether your property needs corrective pruning, removal of a hazardous tree, or an evaluation of potential concerns, we're here to help.

🍂 🌳🪾🏡Healthy trees in spring start with proper care in fall.

Property owners can help trees prepare for winter by:

• Watering deeply during dry periods, especially young or recently planted trees.
• Applying 2–4 inches of mulch over the root zone while keeping it several inches away from the trunk.
• Avoiding “mulch volcanoes,” unnecessary fertilizer, trunk wraps, and damaging roots with equipment.
• Watching for early leaf drop, thinning foliage, dead branches, mushrooms near the base, cracks, or changes in lean.
• Scheduling corrective pruning or removal before winter weather turns an existing problem into costly damage.

An ISA Certified Arborist can identify stress, structural concerns, and proper mitigation options before symptoms become more serious.

🌳 FALL TREE CHECK: WHAT WILL YOUR TREES LOOK LIKE AFTER THE LEAVES COME DOWN?

The Eastern Shore is getting a stretch of sunny, mild fall weather. That makes this a great time to walk your property before more leaves begin hiding what’s happening overhead. The forecast becomes more unsettled heading toward Sunday and Monday, with rain chances increasing across the region.

🍂 Before fall gets farther along, look for:

• Dead limbs that never produced normal foliage this year
• Broken or hanging branches caught in the canopy
• Cracks or separation where large limbs join the trunk
• Mushrooms or decay around the trunk or root flare
• Significant canopy dieback or thinning
• Large limbs extending over your home, driveway, vehicles, or other frequently used areas

One important reminder: a tree doesn’t have to look dead to have a structural concern. Identifying defects early gives you more options for corrective pruning, monitoring, or removal when removal is warranted.

And once the leaves drop? 🍁 Bare branches can actually make structural defects easier to see, making late fall and winter an excellent time to evaluate mature trees.

Be proactive before winter wind, snow, and ice begin testing weak limbs.

🌳 DON’T LET FALL WEATHER FOOL YOU!

Cool mornings may have arrived, but our trees here on the Eastern Shore are still dealing with dry soil, warmer afternoons, and changing fall conditions.

With warmer weather ahead followed by a chance of rain later this weekend, now is a good time to take a walk around your property and look UP. 👀🌳

🍂 Things homeowners should watch for this fall:

• Dead or hanging limbs that could become a problem during fall and winter storms
• Cracks, weak unions, or splitting where large limbs meet the trunk
• Trees that have developed a noticeable lean or changes around the root zone
• Large dead limbs over your home, driveway, vehicles, or other high-use areas
• Recently planted or younger trees showing signs of drought stress

And don’t assume cooler weather means trees no longer need water. Dry fall conditions can continue stressing trees even after temperatures begin dropping.

A little proactive care now can help identify problems before winter wind, snow, and ice put additional load on weak branches and compromised trees.
