Say "trees!" 📸 😁🌲 Back in 2011, Hampton Lumber decided to make a statement by planting larch trees on an Oregon slope. Now every fall, a yellow smiley face appears in a sea of green made up of Douglas fir, western hemlock, noble fir, and western red cedar.

In 30-50 years, the trees will be ready for harvest and processed into lumber at Hampton’s sawmills in Willamina and Tillamook. In their place, new baby trees will be planted —maybe in a new design! What do you think the next shape should be?

As a public service, I offer an easy ID point that I learned in college. It’s amazing how many people don’t know how to identify poison ivy on their property and differentiate from other benign species.
Please see three leaves, central one is serrated or jagged. On both edges. Two adjacent leaves are smooth facing central leaf and serrated only on outer edge. That’s your dead giveaway.
