Disposable wipes are wreaking havoc on critical underground infrastructure and septic systems.
In this interview with CBS Detroit TV, Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice S. Miller discusses the new law in Michigan that requires manufacturers of moistened wipes to put “Do Not Flush” labels on the packaging.
For years, Miller has encouraged people to stop flushing disposable wipes because they clog sewer systems, damage the pumps, make pump stations less efficient and can cause sewage backups, all resulting in very costly repairs and maintenance. She has emphasized that wipes are not biodegradable as some manufacturers claim.
“I commend the Legislature and Gov. Whitmer for establishing labeling standards on disposable wipes packaging. This law has to the potential to save millions of dollars that is currently spent to repair the damage these wipes are having on underground systems everywhere,” Miller said.
