Cast iron drain lines don’t last forever.
These four photos show different stages of deteriorating cast iron plumbing. Over time the inside of the pipe corrodes, builds up scale, and eventually weakens and cracks.
Sometimes a pipe can even develop a crack or break and the system will still continue to work for a while. But when that happens, it’s usually only a matter of time before it suddenly fails — leading to backups, leaks, or a major repair.
Signs your cast iron may be reaching the end of its life:
• Slow drains
• Frequent clogs
• Sewer smells
• Rust flakes or corrosion
• Visible deterioration in the pipe
Most cast iron systems last 40–60 years, depending on conditions.
A simple camera inspection can show exactly what shape your pipes are in before a small issue turns into a big one.
