🌷 Spring into Water Heater Maintenance! 🌷

Spring is here, and it’s the perfect time to give your water heater some TLC! 💧 Here are a few simple tips to keep it running efficiently all year long:

Check the Temperature 🌡️ – Make sure your water heater is set around 120°F. Too hot can waste energy and be dangerous.

Drain & Flush 🚰 – Sediment can build up over time, making your heater work harder. Flushing it out improves efficiency and lifespan.

Inspect for Leaks 🔍 – Look around the tank and pipes for drips. Even small leaks can cause big problems if left unchecked.

Schedule a Professional Tune-Up 👨‍🔧 – A plumber can catch issues early and make sure everything’s running smoothly.

💡 Pro Tip: Spring cleaning isn’t just for your closets—your water heater will thank you too!

Garbage disposals are great, but not everything belongs down there. Putting the wrong things in can lead to clogs, jams, and expensive repairs.

🚫 Avoid putting these in your garbage disposal:

🥓 Grease, fats, and oils – They harden in pipes and cause clogs.
☕ Coffee grounds – They clump together and create sludge in drains.
🥔 Potato peels – Starchy and likely to gum up the disposal.
🌽 Corn husks & celery – The fibers can wrap around the blades.
🥚 Eggshells – The membrane can stick and cause buildup.
🍝 Pasta & rice – They expand with water and clog pipes.

✅ Good rule of thumb: If it’s tough, fibrous, greasy, or expands with water… keep it out of the disposal.

If your disposal is making weird noises, draining slowly, or completely jammed, give us at Stewart's Plumbing a call and we’ll get things flowing again. 5026336000

Winter can be tough on your home’s plumbing, so the first day of spring is a great time to check a few things before small problems turn into expensive repairs.

Here are a few simple spring plumbing tips:

🚰 Check outdoor faucets & hose bibs – Turn them on and look for leaks that could mean a freeze crack.
🏡 Inspect exposed pipes – Look under sinks and in basements for moisture, corrosion, or slow leaks.
🚿 Test water pressure – Sudden changes in pressure can signal hidden plumbing issues.
🍃 Clear outdoor drains & gutters – Spring rain needs somewhere to go.
🔥 Flush your water heater – Sediment buildup can reduce efficiency and lifespan.
🚽 Check toilets for silent leaks – A few drops of food coloring in the tank can reveal a hidden leak.

A little maintenance now can save you money and headaches later in the year.

If you find anything suspicious, give us a call at 502.633.6000 — we’re happy to help keep your plumbing flowing smoothly this spring. 🌷🔧

It's easy to get lucky on your home's plumbing system.

A little home maintenance can keep your pipes flowing smoothly and help you avoid surprise repairs. Here are a few quick plumbing tips:

🔧 Watch what goes down the drain – Grease, coffee grounds, and food scraps can cause stubborn clogs.
🚿 Check for small leaks – A slow drip under a sink can waste a lot of water over time.
🚽 Only flush toilet paper – “Flushable” wipes can still clog pipes.
🌡️ Know where your main water shutoff is – It can save you from major damage in an emergency.
💧 Keep an eye on water pressure – Sudden changes can signal a hidden problem.

If your plumbing isn’t feeling so lucky today, Stewart's Plumbing is always here to help. 5026336000☘️

Thought about putting in a garbage disposal? Here are some of the benefits you might experience:

🗑️ Less food waste in the trash
Food scraps go down the drain instead of sitting in the garbage, which means fewer smells and fewer trips to the curb.

🚿 Cleaner, more convenient kitchen cleanup
Scraping plates into the disposal is quicker and tidier than bagging food waste — especially after big meals or holidays.

🐜 Fewer odors and pests
Less food in the trash helps reduce smells, fruit flies, ants, and other pests in the kitchen.

♻️ Can reduce landfill waste
Food waste sent through wastewater systems is often processed more efficiently than trash sent to landfills.

🕒 Saves time during meal prep and cleanup
Peelings and small scraps can be dealt with immediately instead of piling up on the counter.

🔧 Modern disposals are quiet and reliable
Newer models are far quieter and more durable than older units many homeowners remember.

🏡 Adds convenience and resale appeal
Garbage disposals are a standard feature many buyers expect in modern kitchens.

Don't be a sheeple. Here's some things people get wrong about plumbing:

🚽 “Flushable” wipes are safe to flush (WRONG)
They don’t break down like toilet paper and are a leading cause of sewer backups — even the ones labeled “flushable.”

🛢️ A water heater doesn’t need maintenance (WRONG)
Most tank water heaters should be flushed yearly. Sediment buildup shortens lifespan and hurts efficiency.

🔥 Turning the water heater temperature way up gives more hot water (WRONG)
It increases scald risk and energy costs. Most homes are best set around 120°F.

🚰 Small leaks aren’t a big deal (WRONG)
A slow drip can waste thousands of gallons per year and often points to a bigger issue behind the wall.

🧼 Garbage disposals can handle anything (WRONG)
They’re not trash cans. Grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta, and fibrous foods commonly cause clogs.

❄️ Pipes only freeze when it’s extremely cold (WRONG)
Pipes can freeze just below 32°F, especially in crawlspaces, garages, and exterior walls.

🧪 Chemical drain cleaners are harmless (WRONG)
Frequent use can damage pipes — especially older plumbing — and usually only offers temporary relief.

🏠 If water is coming out, pressure must be fine (WRONG)
High or low pressure can exist even when faucets seem normal, causing long-term wear on fixtures and pipes.

🔧 DIY plumbing fixes always save money (WRONG)
Incorrect materials, overtightened fittings, or “temporary” fixes often lead to bigger repair bills.

💧 No visible leak means no problem (WRONG)
Many leaks happen behind walls, under slabs, or in crawlspaces. Higher water bills or musty smells are common clues.

Time for a new water heater? Here's how to know.

🔥 Your water heater is 8–12 years old
Most traditional tank water heaters last about 10 years. If yours is past that, replacement is often smarter than repair.

🚿 Hot water doesn’t last like it used to
If showers go cold quickly, sediment buildup or a failing heating element may be to blame — especially common with older units.

🔊 Popping, rumbling, or banging noises
Those sounds usually mean hardened sediment at the bottom of the tank. It reduces efficiency and can damage the tank over time.

💧 Rusty or discolored hot water
Brown or reddish water (only on hot) can mean the inside of the tank is rusting.

⚠️ Water pooling around the base
Any moisture, corrosion, or active leaking around the heater is a major red flag. Tanks don’t “heal” — they only get worse.

💸 Rising energy bills
If you’re noticing higher utility bills, replacement may cost less long-term.

With the winter storm hitting central Kentucky this weekend, now’s the time to take a few quick steps to protect your plumbing.

🧯 Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses
Remove hoses, shut off the interior valve if you have one, and open the outdoor spigot temporarily to drain any remaining water.

🧊 Insulate exposed pipes
Pipes in crawlspaces, garages, basements, and along exterior walls are especially vulnerable. Foam insulation, old pool noodles, or even towels can help in a pinch.

🚰 Let faucets drip overnight
A slow drip from the faucet farthest from your main water line can prevent freezing when temperatures hit their lowest.

🚪 Open cabinet doors under sinks
This allows warm air to circulate around pipes, especially in kitchens and bathrooms on exterior walls.

🔧 Locate your main water shut-off valve
If a pipe bursts, shutting off water quickly can prevent major damage. It’s best to know where it is before you need it.

⚡ Prepare for possible power outages
If power goes out, keep faucets dripping if safe to do so. Never use open flames to thaw pipes.

If you notice low water pressure, frost on pipes, or no water at all, those can be early signs of freezing. Give us a call right away — addressing it early can save you a major repair.

☎ We do provide emergency plumbing services - call anytime at 502.633.6000 if you've got a situation on your hands!

Stay warm and stay safe this weekend.
