David Barker Drones

David Barker Drones Aerial photo/video & inspection services, drone training & consultation.

I continue to “spread my wings” outside of my public safety flight duties and offer aerial photo, video, and inspection services, in addition to flight training and consultation services for all matters relating to flying "drones" for recreational purposes (did you know a test is now required to do so?), for commercial purposes under the FAA's "Part-107" regulations, or assisting in the developmen

t and implementation of Public Aircraft programs that operate under a Certificate of Authorization (COA). Let's talk about your aerial photo or inspection needs, "drone" questions you might have, or about getting you started on becoming a certified "Remote Pilot"!

More about me:

I have been involved with radio control (R/C) model aircraft and a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) for nearly 40-years, have served as President of the Red Baron R/C Modelers (https://www.facebook.com/RedBaronRCModelers), a local R/C aviation club, for the past 14-years, and am an instructor for both organizations. Given my involvement and insight in the R/C hobby, in 2010 I began researching Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) technology and the relating regulations - specifically as to how the emerging technology might be used within Public Safety – and made the first presentation on the potential of using “drones” to the City of Idaho Falls. Since a program was authorized in 2017, I have worked to build the City’s UAS program from scratch. Other roles or UAS involvement include;
- FAA Certified Remote Pilot with an sUAS rating,
- Certified instructor for Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), focusing on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS),
- TOP Operator Level-1 certified by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (www.auvsi.org),
- UAS Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for Idaho State University,
- A contact instructor for FEMA’s AWR-345 UAS in Disaster Management course, as administered by the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC) at the University of Hawaii (www.ndptc.hawaii.edu),
- Technical Advisor for DRONERESPONDERS (www.droneresponders.org),
- Contract instructor for DARTdrones (www.dartdrones.com),
- Administrator of the Idaho Public Safety UAS Council (www.IPSUASC.org) (facebook.com/IdahoPublicSafetyUASCouncil)
- Regional Director for Idaho for the Law Enforcement Drone Association (LEDA) (www.ledauas.com/).

Another great presentation of FEMA's AWR-345: Unmanned Aircraft Systems in Disaster Management with the Blue Lake Rancheria in Northern California.

Great class, but unfortunately, not a great travel day afterwards. Flew from Arcata to San Francisco, to Denver, then to Idaho Falls, but had delays every step of the way. Lots of sitting and waiting, and a diversion to Salt Lake City after we had already reached Denver, then a near diversion to Colorado Springs.
No time for food or bathroom break when running from one end of a terminal to the other. And, of course, it was THIS leg of the travel that I DIDN'T upgrade seats to have a little legroom! Lessons were learned.
At least the day ended with some nice sunset views.

We’ve seen a significant increase in drone incursions over wildfires in the past month, with 50 drone incursions reported so far in 2026.

Keep your drone away from wildfires. Unauthorized drone flights can force firefighting aircraft to ground, delaying suppression efforts and increasing risk to firefighters and the public.

Flying a drone over or near a wildfire is illegal.

I had the opportunity to take some pictures of the new Desert Eagles Model Airplane Club facility, located within the City of Idaho Falls' Noise Park complex, west of Idaho Falls.

This is a great addition to the Noise Park Complex, and club members put in a LOT of work during HOT days to carve their new home out of the desert landscape.

The Noise Park area has been considered for such a facility/development for over 40 years, but the Desert Eagles now have a facility fitting of their name, and a place to enjoy flying for many years into the future!

With thanks to the City of Idaho Falls, congratulations on the new facility! May it serve you well for many, many years.
