The former Whirlpool water softener had a small leak deep inside and concealed from view until it caused calcification around the cam, seizing it up, and stripping the little teeth off of the electric motor gear. It was all repairable, but the customer wanted the convenience of a contractor grade water softener that can be serviced by any plumber with replaceable parts that can come right off the shelf instead of waiting for a discontinued part off of Ebay or Amazon. The WaterTender has a good reputation for not needing service for the majority of it's life.
