Earlier this month, Nature Works hosted our annual fire refresher and field day. We had an amazing turnout and got the opportunity to highlight Incident Within an Incident training. Last week Nature Works started an exciting project with West Virginia TNC. A Marsh Master was used to mow a wetland that is being heavily encroached with invasive cattail. This cattail is taking away from essential native wetland species. Our goal is to reduce the impact of the cattail to rejuvenate and restore the native habitats of this unique wetland. Don't wait until its too late!

This snowpack will provide increased moisture as it slowly melts in this cold weather. While this seems like a good thing, it can cause detrimental affects to the native plant communities. The increased moisture will cause rapid growing invasive plants to shoot up, out competing the native species. Our specialized team of certified pesticide applicators will apply lowest toxicity, EPA aquatic approved herbicide to mitigate invasive plant pressure on native habitats.

We may be stuck in the snow now, but last week our RX fire crew was in Broad Run, VA completing a 18 acre understory burn ahead of the storm. This was the first controlled burn of the 2026 spring burn season, and we can not wait to complete many more. This burn was an exciting learning experience and provided numerous ecological benefits.
