A beautiful tribute to Mick Given. Thanks ABC Ohio Valley Chapter and President Doug Bolton.

MICK GIVEN -- IN LIFE, DEATH INSPIRES THIS LEADER’S PASSIONS

Doug Bolton is president of ABC’s Ohio Valley chapter

Early last Tuesday, Mick Given had emailed me to let me know he wasn’t going to be able to make an 8 a.m. board meeting that morning. “I know everything is in great hands with you …" Mick wrote from his phone. “What I would like to ask however is that we look at a day early next week that you could travel to Sidney and we could meet and review everything so I can try to get caught up. What does your Tuesday look like for next week?”

That Tuesday is today, and I will be in Sidney. But it won’t be to meet with Mick. But rather to attend his funeral. Last May, when I first saw that Associated Builders & Contractors was looking for a new leader for its Ohio Valley chapter, the first person I thought about getting re-acquainted with was Mick Given. As a 34-year-old publisher of the Dayton Business Journal in 1997, I got to know Mick – then a rising star and about to be named CEO of Ferguson Construction Co. Like most people who knew Mick, I still can’t believe he is gone. He was so appreciative of my interest in taking the helm of ABC and its many initiatives. This organization, its mission, its work and its reach has inspired me in my Act V. Now, doing all this, to memorialize and honor Mick Given provides passion that will last my lifetime. Mick, may you rest in peace, and know your life and death has and will forever dramatically impact the merit-shop movement and this important construction industry in your beloved hometown and beyond.

SLAGLE MECHANICAL CONTRACTOR’S, INC Leads Construction Industry in Health and Safety, Says ABC Report
Sidney, OH, February 2026 —Slagle Mechanical Contractor’s, Inc announced today it has achieved Diamond level in Associated Builders and Contractors’ STEP® Health and Safety Management System for the second consecutive year. STEP enables top-performing ABC members like Slagle Mechanical Contractor’s, Inc to achieve incident rates 658% safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics construction industry average, reducing total recordable incident rates by 85%.
The real-world impacts of STEP are based on the findings in ABC’s 2025 Health and Safety Performance Report, an annual guide to construction jobsite health and safety best practices. Established in 1989, STEP provides contractors and suppliers with a robust, no-cost framework for measuring health and safety data and benchmarking with peers in the industry.
“STEP will help any contractor or supplier reinforce their commitment to the well-being of their workforce,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development. “If we choose to lead, if we choose to commit and if we choose to transform, together we can ensure every construction worker goes home safer, happier, healthier and more fulfilled every single day.
“Transforming the status quo to set the expectation that all incidents are preventable creates a culture where health and safety are elevated to core values, a moral obligation for employers and employees,” said Sizemore. “Priorities change frequently, but values remain consistent. The tools in STEP, as detailed in ABC’s annual safety report, show the blueprint of how industry leaders and workers like those at Slagle Mechanical Contractor’s, Inc create a culture of health and safety and win and deliver work to communities without incident.”
STEP participants measure their safety processes and policies on key components and the criteria for best practices through a detailed questionnaire, with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incident rates.
Any company can participate in STEP. Visit abc.org/step to begin or continue your safety journey.

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) is a national trade association that advances and defends the principles of the merit shop in the construction industry, representing merit shop contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers and related firms in the United States.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Given family and the Ferguson Construction family as they grieve the loss of their mentor and leader and a profound member of the community.

With Sorrow, We Say Goodbye to Our CEO, Martin (Mick) Given

The construction industry lost an inspiring leader yesterday with the passing of our CEO, Martin (Mick) Given. For nearly five decades, Mick's leadership fueled Ferguson Construction's growth and advanced transformation across the industry. He was equally passionate about promoting the trades and developing the next generation through workforce partnerships.

Mick's legacy of mentorship and excellence will continue to guide us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Vickie; his children, Brent, Jackie, and Leslie; and his entire family.

Proud to support and be a part of such a great organization!
