A Bethesda family had a living room nobody sat in. The furniture hugged the walls, one overhead fixture did all the lighting, and a flat builder beige drained the warmth out of everything. Our interior design service started with how they actually live, which is homework at six and reading at nine. We pulled the seating into a proper grouping around the fireplace, layered in floor and table lamps on the dark side of the room, and chose a warm putty tone for the walls with deeper trim to give the room its edges. No construction, no floor plan changes, just deliberate design decisions. By the first week of school it had quietly become the most used room in the house.
