Only a half hour to two hours away from the greater Bay Area, The Russian River offers some great steelhead fishing opportunities. The Don Clausen Fish Hatchery located at the bottom of the Warm Springs Dam has been producing beautiful hatchery fish for years with some fish weighing in the 20# class. In addition, the Russian River has a big run of natives that produce mind-blowing, exhilarating runs that can burn up a spinning reel. You will get the best of both with plenty of wild and hatchery fish. The added bonus is you can keep up to two (2) hatchery fish per day and be home in time that evening to enjoy a great steelhead dinner. My latest boat is a 17'x54" River Craft with custom seats for your all day comfort, which will take 2 people comfortably and can also make room for that third family member or friend that wants to join in on the fun. For larger groups, I work with other local fishing guides, so the more the merrier. One of my latest boats also converts to a two person fly fishing machine with a built in casting platform and flat floors for your casting comfort. will provide all of the terminal tackle, swivels, weights and hooks, so no worries there. On a typical trip, I will bring 6 to 8 rods already set up and ready to fish. This way, if you break off on a snag or if the big fish beats you to the trees, I can hand you another matched rod, and you are back in the water fishing quickly.
