Should you insulate your water heater to improve efficiency?
If your water heater was manufactured in 2004 or later, it likely already has enough built-in insulation to prevent significant heat loss. In fact, if the outside of the tank doesn't feel warm to the touch, adding insulation probably won't make much difference.
For many homeowners, especially those with older oil-fired water heaters, the bigger question isn't insulation. It's age. Most storage-tank water heaters last between 7 and 13 years. As they get older, efficiency declines, repair costs increase, and adding insulation won't solve those underlying issues.
