The layer you see behind siding is often part of your home's water-resistive barrier — and it's more important than most homeowners realize.

Siding is what you see.

But it isn't the entire wall.

Depending on how the home was built, behind that siding you may find a weather-resistive barrier or housewrap over structural sheathing.

Those layers help manage water that gets behind the exterior cladding.

That's why storm-damaged siding is about more than curb appeal.

If wind tears panels away, we want to know:

Did only the siding come loose?
Did the weather barrier tear too?
Is sheathing now exposed?
Did wind-driven rain get behind the wall?
Are the remaining panels still properly locked and fastened?

Putting one piece of siding back over a damaged wall assembly doesn't necessarily solve the problem underneath.

And this is one of those situations where what you can't see matters just as much as what you can.

After a major wind event, the goal isn't simply to make the exterior look normal again.

It's to make sure the wall is still managing water the way it should.

Yes — a ceiling stain can appear days after a storm, and the spot on the ceiling may not be directly below where the water entered.

Water rarely follows the neat path we'd like it to.

Rain can get underneath damaged roofing or flashing, move along roof decking, framing or insulation, and finally reach the ceiling somewhere else.

That means a storm can happen Sunday and the first visible interior stain may not become obvious until later.

But here's another important point:
A ceiling stain doesn't automatically prove the roof is the source.

Depending on what's above that area, moisture can also come from plumbing, HVAC condensation or an attic ventilation issue.

So don't start by painting over it.

And don't start by assuming the entire roof has failed.

Start by figuring out where the moisture came from.

If the stain is new, photograph it.

If it's actively changing, pay attention to whether it grows after rainfall.

If you can safely access the attic, signs of recent moisture can help narrow down the source.

Then get the correct system inspected.

The stain is the symptom.

The job is finding the source.

A contractor knocking on your door after a storm isn't automatically a scam, but it is important to Look Local First!

Pressure to sign immediately is when we'd slow down.
Major storms bring legitimate contractors into damaged neighborhoods.

They also bring people looking to take advantage of homeowners who are overwhelmed and trying to get their houses repaired quickly.

Before signing anything, ask some basic questions.
✔️Who exactly is doing the work?
✔️Are they properly insured and licensed where required?
✔️Can they give you a written scope showing what they're actually proposing?
✔️What materials are being installed?
✔️What warranties come with the work?
✔️Can you verify the company locally?

And one of the biggest red flags:
“You need to sign this right now.”...........You don't.
A roof isn't a timeshare.

A legitimate contractor should be able to explain what they found, show you the damage, put the scope in writing and give you an opportunity to understand what you're agreeing to.

After a storm, urgency can be real when water is entering the house.
Pressure and urgency are not the same thing.............Know the difference.

With the NC State Fair opening today, we thought it was a good reminder that:
The State Fair has rides. Your shingles shouldn't.

If you're heading to the N.C. State Fair this weekend, enjoy the Ferris wheel, the midway and whatever deep-fried decision you're about to make.

Your roof, on the other hand, should be considerably less exciting.

After the severe weather that moved through Central North Carolina last weekend, take five minutes sometime this weekend and walk around your house from the ground.

Look up for anything that seems different:
✔️A shingle edge that appears lifted.
✔️Something lying in the yard that looks suspiciously like it used to belong on your roof.
✔️Loose siding.
✔️A gutter that isn't sitting where it used to.
✔️Tree limbs resting against the house.
✔️Flashing or trim that looks out of place.

You don't need to climb onto the roof.
And you don't need to convince yourself that every strange-looking shingle means you need a new one.

You're just looking for a reason to have something checked more closely.
Then go enjoy the fair.

Preferably with all of your shingles staying exactly where they belong.

If Sunday's storms damaged your roof or siding, photograph the damage before repairs begin.

That sounds simple, but it is one of the most important things a homeowner can do after severe weather.

Before shingles are moved, siding is reattached, debris is hauled away or a temporary tarp covers the area, safely document what you can see.

Start from the ground.

✔️Take wide photos of every side of the house. Then photograph missing shingles, loose siding, fallen limbs, damaged gutters, flashing, broken trim and anything else that looks different after the storm.
✔️Inside, document new ceiling stains, wet insulation, dripping water or damaged drywall.
✔️If part of the home is exposed to rain, temporary protection may be necessary to prevent additional damage — but don't put yourself on a wet, damaged or unstable roof trying to handle it yourself.
✔️And if an insurance claim is involved, contact your agent or carrier promptly and ask what they need from you before permanent repairs begin.
✔️After a tornado or major wind event, there can be pressure to make every decision immediately............You don't have to.

Document first. Protect the home. Then figure out exactly what needs to be repaired.
That creates a much clearer starting point for the homeowner, contractor and insurance adjuster.

Storm Season Isn’t Over Yet

October does not mean North Carolina is finished with storm season.

Early fall can still bring heavy rain, strong winds, and severe weather to our part of North Carolina.

So before the next round of bad weather arrives, take a few minutes to check your home from the ground.

Look for:

• Loose or missing shingles
• Tree limbs hanging over the roof
• Gutters packed with leaves or debris
• Damaged siding or exterior trim
• Loose flashing you can safely see from the ground
• Water stains that appeared after the last storm

And if you aren’t sure what you’re seeing, don’t climb onto the roof yourself.

Have it inspected.

Preparing your roof for storm season isn’t about trying to find something wrong with your house.

It’s about knowing what condition your roof is in before the next heavy rain tells you.

Preventive roof maintenance now can also give you time to address a small problem before it turns into interior water damage.

Granules in the Gutter: Normal or a Warning Sign?

A few loose shingle granules aren’t automatically a problem. Heavy or continuing granule loss can be a reason to have your roof checked.

Those little sand-like pieces you sometimes notice in your gutters or near your downspouts come from the surface of asphalt shingles.

Some loose granules can occur, particularly with newer roofing materials.

What gets our attention is when we see:

• Large amounts collecting in gutters
• Noticeable bare or smooth patches on shingles
• Granule loss across large sections of the roof
• Curling, cracking, or brittle shingles at the same time
• An older roof showing several of these symptoms together

Why does shingle granule loss matter?

The granulated surface is part of the shingle’s protective system. When significant areas become worn, the condition of the shingle deserves a closer look.

But don’t diagnose your entire roof from a handful of granules in the downspout.

Look at the whole roofing system.

That’s the difference between spotting a symptom and actually diagnosing the roof.
