Most people see a box beam installed and assume it’s one solid piece of timber. It isn’t.

Real wood boards are joined around a hollow center, keeping the weight down while giving you the same solid wood look. They can add detail to a ceiling, wrap an existing structural beam, or conceal wiring and other elements.

Hard maple is a good choice when you want the wood to feel clean and quiet rather than busy.

This top is built in edge grain at 2 inches thick. The straight grain keeps the look simple, while the extra thickness gives it a solid presence in the kitchen.

The 1/4-inch round-over takes the sharp corner off without adding a decorative profile. Rubio Monocoat leaves the surface with a natural, low-sheen finish that still feels like wood.

Got all the way to the shop this morning before realizing I’d left my key behind. Strong start.

So the first job of the day was waiting outside for Alfredo to come to the rescue. Turns out it’s hard to get much woodworking done from the other side of the front door.

He showed up with the key, and yes, we did eventually make it inside.

Getting a repeat order from someone who uses our slabs in their own cabinetry work means a lot.
