đź‘€ Ever wonder what that giant steel box is when you drive past a construction site?
That big steel box sitting down in the trench is called a trench box (or trench shield), and it’s one of the most important safety tools used in underground construction.
When we install or repair sewer lines, water services, or other underground utilities, the trench can sometimes be 6–15 feet deep or more. At those depths, the surrounding soil can become unstable and cave-ins can happen without warning.
And here’s something many people don’t realize…
A cubic yard of soil can weigh over 2,500 pounds. That means even a small collapse can be extremely dangerous.
That’s why crews use trench boxes.
These heavy-duty steel shields are lowered into the trench with an excavator and create a protected workspace so crews can safely install pipes and utilities below ground.
As the work moves down the trench, the excavator slides the trench box forward section by section so the crew stays protected the entire time.
So next time you see a big steel box in the ground on a job site, you’re actually looking at a major safety system that protects the workers installing the infrastructure your home depends on every day.
At Limitless Plumbing and Sewer, LLC, safety is always a top priority when we’re installing or repairing underground utilities.
