There are flies in my house, just a few. Warmer days have let them in. Tomorrow more winter weather returns. It will kill off the warm weather insects (and few green shoots in the ground) who thought they were getting an early spring. I may not like the return of flies but I cannot wait for the return of the butterflies in the gardens here at Spruce Hill. Last year I thoroughly enjoyed every visiting butterfly and bee and eagerly await their return!

Even when the ground is dry and brown there is beauty in an Iowa sunset. Tomorrow is supposed to bring some much needed snow, we’ve had a remarkably mild winter with very little snow. I am not sure how this season’s tulips will do with such little cold. Every season has its purpose and many people have been so grateful for a warmer winter but as a flower farmer I appreciate the need for all seasons, even winter. Many flowers need weeks of below freezing temps to properly bloom. We will still have lots of flowers this year but some will not do as well without a good winter rest, I feel the same way too.

Having a flower farm seems to be the dream of so many people. It actually was never something I even imagined. Life has a way of changing in the most unexpected ways. There are so many things about where my life is that I couldn’t have ever imagined, but i also coul have forseen the blessings we would receive even through such difficult trials. Every blossom was a blessing.

Over 4,000 tulips tucked in for the winter. In spring we will have tulips for sale! We easily fit all of them into one 50 foot long bed that recently had Dahlias dug up to be stored for winter.
