Designed and installed by Recover in 2022, this 1,000 sq. ft. rooftop garden overlooking the Charles River is evolving into a haven for pollinators and people alike.

This urban oasis blends hardwood decking, custom planters, and a semi-intensive green roof planted with Sea Pink, Cinquefoil, Catchfly, sedum, thyme, and other resilient species. Together, the layered plant palette creates shade, biodiversity, and a cooler microclimate—softening the sounds of the city while offering a peaceful place to gather above it all.

From quiet mornings to Fourth of July fireworks over the Esplanade, this roof was designed to connect outdoor living with ecological value.

Lately, our living roofs have awakened for spring 🌱

Ferns are unfurling, wild ginger glistens with morning dew, and signs of biodiversity are emerging across last season’s leaves. Pink and purple blossoms are beginning to take center stage, while large spans of greenery are woven into the cityscape, and vibrant trees are budding -- offering a glorious view for the offices and residential apartments nearby.

An update from the rooftop soil at Amherst College.

On the Science Center green roof, our horticulture team has been cultivating life with mycelium—the hidden network that powers healthy ecosystems. By introducing mushroom species like reishi and maitake, we’re enriching rooftop soils, jumpstarting decomposition, and supporting biodiversity in a place you might not expect: on a roof!

The first image features Pycnoporus cinnabarinus—also known as cinnabar polypore—a saprophytic white-rot fungus and primary decomposer. It breaks down lignin and cellulose in dead plant material, unlocking micronutrients and making them bioavailable for the next generation of growth. This is exactly the kind of fungal activity we’re encouraging on the roof. As a bonus, it also retains moisture and provides habitat and food for insects, slugs, and other small critters that support a healthy rooftop ecosystem.

Amherst College recently earned a Gold STARS rating and is advancing toward full campus decarbonization by 2030. From stormwater to soil biology, this roof reflects what’s possible when long-term stewardship meets ecological curiosity.

As climate resilience remains a priority, this project shows how North America’s suburbs can be reshaped with green infrastructure and when vision meets leadership.

At Recover, we aim to look beyond conventional solutions and invite you to bring us your ideas.

Located beside the commuter rail in Wi******er, this extensive sedum green roof was designed for sound attenuation, cooling performance, and curb appeal.

After discovering a cracked ridge beam from heavy snow loads, Recover co-founder Mark Winterer reimagined his 1,300-square-foot ranch house—vaulting ceilings, reinforcing rafters, and replacing shingles with a fully adhered TPO membrane to support a living roof.

Using Conservation Technology’s anti-slip system, the green roof is secured on a 4:12-pitched roof without the use of mechanical fasteners—proving that residential green roofs can be both practical and transformative.

At Recover, we often look at the big picture—literally, expansive swaths of green roofs shaping our cities.

But our highly trained horticulture team also gets up close and personal, inspecting plants leaf by leaf for health, resilience, and signs of biodiversity 🐝🌼

These macro moments take us on a quieter tour of the rooftops and remind us that warmer, sunnier days are just ahead.

Do you have a unique or underutilized space that would benefit from a green roof? Get in touch today, and we'll get you on the calendar for 2026.
