Stone Edge Farm MicroGrid

Stone Edge Farm MicroGrid The future can have reliable, sustainable, and secure energy for all. The SEF MicroGrid Project is Guiding principals:
1.)

The Department of Energy defines a Microgrid as "a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources with clearly defined electrical boundaries that act as a single, controllable entity with respect to the grid having the ability to connect and disconnect from the grid to operate in both grid-connected or island mode." Project Timeline:

Phase 1:
Island the MicroGrid and sort out l

oad shedding and primary control issues (2015)

Phase 2:
Rule 21 approval for parallel operation (11/2015)

Phase 3:
Partner with PG&E and Sonoma Clean Power to explore community based microgram connection exploring grid/microgrid symbiotic relationship (2016). The primary directive of the microgrid project is to reduce the carbon footprint of the Stone Edge Farm property as well as establish a degree of energy independence. This goal is to be the fundamental design consideration at all times. This goal shall be used for guidance when determining system changes, equipment choices and implementation of work efforts. It is the intent of the parties involved to see how far below zero a 16 acre urban farm can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Corollary #1
Seek out and find any and all technologies to accomplish this goal. Failure is the crucible of success.
2.) Do not fear failure, embrace it.
3.) We may have to do some things twice, maybe even a third time. Corollary #2
You will not use cost as your first criteria in your decision making process. "Money is like manure; it's not worth a thing unless it's spread around encouraging young things to grow." - Thornton Wilder

Delegates from the Thai Metropolitan Electricity Authority (การไฟฟ้านครหลวง MEA), a Bangkok-based distribution utility serving more than 4 million customers, arrived at SEF MicroGrid just as the vulnerabilities—and strengths—of California’s electric system were on full display. Progressive design & engineering combined w/ clean energy generation & storage enable SEF MicroGrid to continue powering its multi-residential property in the face of utility power outages no matter the length of time. Keep your power on w/ UCDavis

Stringing power lines over thousands of miles makes California's grid extremely vulnerable. Additionally, there is energy loss when transmitting energy long distances, making electricity more expensive.

The Solution: Distributed energy and microgrids. Allowing communities to produce and store their own energy for consumption prevents the need for power lines and widespread outages when there is a high fire risk.

These outages, which PGE says will happen with increased frequency, are costing California's economy billions of dollars. It would be far more cost-effective and sensible to start implementing microgrids statewide. Our microgrid in was able to keep the power on despite the outages occurring all across Northern California. When people don't have power, it becomes very costly. Lost wages, food spoilage, medication spoilage, no gas for vehicles, and emotional distress are only a few of the reasons why we cannot afford anymore . Let's prevent incidences like the .

The intentional blackout which cut power to almost a million people is estimated to cost California's economy nearly 1 billion USD. Implementing solar+storage would make blackouts a thing of the past. Distributed energy generation and storage eliminates the need for unstable and vulnerable power lines stretching thousands of miles and allows energy consumers to always have access to clean energy.

When the main grid went down for several days last week, we went into microgrid mode, disconnecting from the grid, and were able to power 3 homes, 2 trailers, and several electric vehicles. Stone Edge Farm MicroGrid also powered a refrigeration van for downtown Sonoma restaurants.

"The Message is Clear: More Microgrids Needed"! 👏🏻

Will California ramp up development of microgrids after massive power outages this week left 738,000 electric customers in the dark?
