The purple and yellow combo doesn’t stop giving and these clients have used this super hot gas fire pit more than they ever thought they would over the last year!

I seriously get the biggest wave of satisfaction when I finish a big project. It’s some kind of type-a completion/ check-off-the-task from the list but also a super non type-a feeling that I created something that is going to bring beauty into the world and create habitat for pollinators and connect people to nature. The part of me that likes instant gratification is so satisfied to actually SEE my projects built a few months later...ideas brought to life! Hard to believe I once thought my path was academic, which is pretty much the antithesis of this in terms of real-world application. Life is bigger than all of us. We are just passing through, trying to do good while we are here.

This is true friendship: Olivia and I have known each other since early elementary school. We share both trauma - we lost our fathers when we were in junior high - as well as a slightly warped and malevolent sense of humor. We inspire each other intellectually and creatively. The best of all worlds in a friendship. Years go by and we pick up where we left off. Totally love her.

I started making my wreaths today and this one turned out almost as big as me. All materials are sourced from my garden (leucadendrons, succulents etc) or the open space right next door (redwood, cotoneaster, eucalyptus etc). It always amazes me how many colors and textures can be found in a half mile radius and how gorgeous they are when combined in this way. Also amazing is that I finally found a good purpose for the most useless invasive plant of all time - Privet. The berries (that I have cursed many times over while sweeping and removing germinated seeds everywhere) are an incredible purple that adds a whole new color dimension into my wreaths! ❤

This project was one of the more fun and interesting I've worked on from a learning perspective. Total dune restoration going on here! Plants still have a lot of growing to do but I'm really happy with how everything looks. What an improvement.

Want to know something funny? We finished this project a few weeks ago and people are literally stopping and taking photos multiple times a day. I mean, it's super beautiful and all, but might this have something to do with COVID-induced boredom? 😂 Sooooo many people taking photos that it's actually starting to bother the folks who live here! PSA: don't make your house too nice or random hoardes will stalk you. And as I always say...if you think it looks good now, wait until the plants grow in!

I took a new project in Carmel and I could hear the waves crashing at the beach the whole time I was talking to my client! I *had* to stop at the beach afterwards and eat my breakfast and do a quick little painting. I was so glad I did!

Got this review from a client over the hill, on a project I almost didn't take (just due to location). Almost made me cry!
"What I love most about Nicole is that she really listens. She did an excellent job of integrating all of my goals into a beautiful and thoughtful design. She welcomed my creativity to the process and worked with me to zero in on the right solutions even when I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted. The day she came for a consultation, we were walking around my poor neglected yard. She came upon the old claw foot tub I had been using as a planter and she suggested I turn it into a real outdoor tub. At that moment - I knew I would hire her because she was already seeing the highest potential of what was currently in the space. Having a plumbed outdoor claw foot tub was a dream of mine but every time I mentioned it to other designers they jumped into all the reasons it couldn't/shouldn't be done - so I had kind of given up on the thought. She insisted it wouldn't be a problem and it wasn't. I am so grateful I found her because sitting in my outdoor tub with the steam rising around me, surrounded by flowers, gazing at the stars is absolutely divine! She has excellent follow-up and follow through as well. We completed the design in a about a month but it took another 9 months to schedule and execute the project. Nicole stayed involved throughout the process. Even though her primary service area is Santa Cruz, she helped me find a great contractor in the San Jose Area. She checked in with me and the contractor and was always available for design clarifications or changes. She really took the time to understand my style and color scheme, my struggles with the space and my desires. Honestly, she surprised me with the beauty and originality of what she created. As I spend time in my yard, I see the brilliance of her design more and more. From the central circular garden to the varied textures of the plants and the beauty and sacredness of each tree and shrub. She managed to create a drought tolerant, evergreen, hummingbird and bee friendly, no mow, cottage inspired design with functional areas for living that are easy to maintain! The space really fits my lifestyle now and I spend most of my day outside. Obviously - I highly recommend Nicole. On top of being an excellent designer, she is a kind and genuine human being who loves Nature."
