If using a generator during a power outage, follow the 20-20-20 rule: Keep generators 20 feet away from the house, doors, & windows. Power off & allow a 20-minute cooldown before refueling. Purchase a battery operated $20 alarm to detect carbon monoxide
Also during the 20 minute cool down check the oil and look over the generator be sure to check your cords are in good shape.
Never try to power the house wiring by plugging the generator into a wall outlet, a practice known as backfeeding. This is extremely dangerous and is an electrocution risk to utility workers and neighbours served by the same utility transformer.
