In an effort to ensure a safe and respectful holiday for all, the Town of Chatham will be closing its south-facing beaches and Lighthouse Beach one hour earlier than usual from July 2nd through July 5th. Beach parking lots will close at 9:00 p.m., and the beaches will be cleared of visitors shortly thereafter.

This temporary adjustment is being implemented in the interest of public safety and to reduce the potential for disorderly behavior during a traditionally busy and high-traffic holiday weekend. Chatham Police officers will be present to enforce the earlier closures.

The Town may implement similar beach restrictions on select dates throughout the summer, as determined by public safety officials and based on expected beach activity levels.

Chatham remains committed to welcoming all who wish to enjoy our natural beauty while ensuring the health, safety, and enjoyment of everyone.

The water main on Seaview Avenue from Main Street to Highland Avenue, including Seaview Terrace and Fairway Drive, has been shut down to facilitate repairs to a service break.

Contractors are on site and it is expected that repairs will be completed in 2-3 hours, barring unforeseen circumstances.

If you are in the affected area, once service is restored, please run your cold taps for a few minutes to clear any discolored water.

Drought and Chatham Irrigation regulations:

Despite the Massachusetts Drought Status for our region dropping to Level 1- Mild Drought, water conservation measures remain in place.

If you have reactivated your irrigation system, please be sure it is programmed in compliance with the water conservation restrictions of Thursday, May 1, 2025 which are still in effect:

Until further notice, all non-essential outdoor water use shall be restricted to no more than two days per week. Watering by sprinkler or irrigation is allowed on customer assigned days only before 9:00 AM and after 5:00 PM.
• Odd numbered addresses are assigned Tuesdays and Thursdays.
• Even numbered addresses are assigned Wednesdays and Fridays.
As a reminder, non-essential uses include:
• Irrigation of lawns via sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems
• Washing of vehicles, except in a commercial car wash or as necessary for operator safety
• Washing of exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways, or sidewalks (except as necessary to apply surface treatments such as paint, preservatives, stucco, pavement, or concrete).

Households and businesses that draw water from private wells are exempt from these restrictions; however, the Town encourages their participation given their impact on our shared aquifer.

Mandatory water restrictions put in place now will help protect our resources and possibly reduce greater water shortages this summer. The Chatham Water Department respectfully requests the support of our residents and business community in complying with these restrictions to ensure the future health and adequacy of our water supply. 🥶Cape Cod Gardeners: Please step away from the panic button.

Yes, it's going to be cooler than normal for the next few nights.

No, this is not the Garden Apocalypse.

Most of Cape Cod is expected to stay around 50°F, with some spots dipping into the upper 40s. That's a little chilly for late May, but it's not unusual and it's not a freeze.

Here's the quick version:

🌸 Hydrangeas? Fine.

🌱 Perennials? Fine.

🥬 Lettuce, kale, peas, and other cool-season vegetables? Also fine.

🍅 Tomatoes, peppers, basil, cucumbers, melons, and eggplant? They're the drama queens of the garden. They prefer warm nights and may sulk when temperatures dip into the upper 40s and low 50s.

🪴 Tropical plants and houseplants that have moved outdoors for the summer may need extra attention. If you can bring them inside, do it.

If you're worried about tender plants, cover them with a sheet, light towel, or row cover overnight. Container plants can also be moved into a garage, shed, or protected spot.

The good news? This weather may slow growth a bit, but for most gardens on Cape Cod, it's not a disaster.

Think "light jacket weather" for your basil, not "evacuate immediately."

Hold on to your hats tomorrow! (And secure lawn furniture and trash containers).

Saturday is going to be a miserable day to be outdoors. In addition to unseasonably cold temperatures and scattered rain showers, we're also looking at wind gusts up to 45-55 miles per hour, with potentially stronger gusts up to 60 miles per hour on the Cape and Islands. Could be strong enough to knock down a few tree branches/power lines. Secure any lose outdoor objects.

The Chatham Blessing of the Fleet is 2 weeks away! Join us on Sunday, May 31st @ 2pm at the Fish Pier for the blessing ceremony and celebration. Free and open to the public. Family fun! Local seafood! Bar opens at 1pm. Parking & Shuttle from Chatham Elementary. Ceremony starts at 2pm.

Thursday afternoon update from the Town of Chatham:

Update Thursday Feb. 26 @ 1:00 p.m.

Chatham Town Offices, the Center for Active Living and the Transfer Station are open for normal operations.

Percentage of outages in Town continues to fluctuate between 40% - 50% as restorations are made and areas are taken off-line to accommodate repairs. Our Emergency Management team continues to coordinate with Eversource to identify the areas in Town which will bring the most amount of people back online in the shortest amount of time.

Eversource has set a global restoration time for Chatham at 4 p.m., Friday, February 27th. This means they expect to have 99% of customers restored by that time. Many customers will have power restored sooner. The regional shelter at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, 351 Pleasant Lake Avenue, in Harwich is open. Free transportation to the shelter is available by calling the Cape Cod RTA anytime between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. at 508-385-1430 and selecting Option 2.

The Community Center, 702 Main Street, remains open as a Personal Care Site until 9 p.m. tonight. Stop by to warm up and recharge devices.
Monomoy Regional High School, 75 Oak Street, Harwich is open as a personal care site until 3:30 p.m. today with showers and food available.

Our Department of Public Works continues clean-up efforts pushing back snow banks, clearing snow piles from intersections to improve site distance, clearing sidewalks, and ensuring Town facilities and parking lots are cleared of snow today and tomorrow. Debris removal (trees and branches) will begin as early as next week.

Update Wednesday, 2/25 @1:15 p.m.

Currently 56% out, so the overall trend is positive. 26 Eversource field crews in Town and a dedicated representative remains in our Emergency Operations Center coordinating priority restorations.

The regional shelter at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, 351 Pleasant Lake Avenue, in Harwich is open. Free transportation to the shelter is available by calling the Cape Cod RTA anytime between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. at 508-385-1430, that’s 508-385-1430 and selecting Option 2.

Monomoy Regional Schools will be closed again tomorrow. The Regional High School is open as a personal care site until 3:30 p.m. today and will re-open as such tomorrow from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Showers and food are available.

Our Emergency Operation Center has logged over 220 storm-related calls, and our Fire Department has responded to over 160 storm-related incidents since Monday morning.

If you are planning on parking downtown tonight, please use an off-street lot as crews will be clearing snow beginning at 8 p.m.
