Important information for all

The invasive box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis) has been detected for the first time in Massachusetts in Barnstable County. Box tree moth caterpillars primarily feed on boxwood (Buxus spp.), and are capable of completely defoliating their host.

Eventually, defoliation, webbing, and green-black frass pellets may be noticed as a result of box tree moth infestation. Defoliated leaves may appear “peeled” or with only a midrib remaining. Severely infested plants look brown or scorched.

Anyone in Massachusetts (outside of Barnstable County) who suspects they have seen this insect or its damage to boxwood should report it immediately, here: https://massnrc.org/pests/report.aspx .
