Gavin and his family live in Rockport, MA and the downstairs finished area has a bedroom that needed an ART barn door.

Soufflés was a popular coffee kitchen spot located at 14 Market Square, Newburyport which closed some years ago.

Tim Karatzas, owner of Karatzas Contracting LLC is a long-time friend whose business located in our same warehouse space in Amesbury, and he and his crew did demo and rebuild of the space. Beaman Cole, builder crew member, suggested The Barndoorist could make something neat out of part of the old countertop from this establishment. The giant long and heavy slab of randomly raised Douglass Fir wood blocks was stored in our workshop for future use!

We crafted heavy-duty low-profile, top-mounted wheels fastened to a metal plate partly embedded into the build, which now got even heavier and thicker when we adhered tongue and groove boards to the other side. Tests proved that a sturdy angle iron rail would be required to hold this up for all time. Once a heavy sliding door is hung, it rolls with ease, but everything had to be just so. The brackets mounted to the header above Gavin’s room entryway have hidden metal stanchions behind them (and a broken drill bit lol) that transfer the force against a metal flinch plate behind the painted drywall for the main header beam over the opening.

We used our hidden base guide and added “side boards” to complete the door installation after rolling it into the room on temporary casters. To get this off the trailer and into the back yard bulkhead entryway, Matthew C. Tibert of M.C. Tibert Construction from Gloucester and his crew who have been working on renovating the upstairs helped move this 300+ Lbs beast across the lawn and into the room!

Am 8x8 raised block cut off section we also gave to Gavin could become a neat wall hanging or even a 3-D chess board!

The whole project took about 10 hours to build and install, and as it turns out, if you were to walk from the site which is now called The Plume Café - NBPT coffee shop to Rockport, that’s about how long it would take.

Brianna, Bryan, and their busy family from Lincoln, MA required a barn door rescue.

Like many folks, they bought a kit door and assembled it with plans to close off the hall way bathroom. But sadly, a few common things occurred: The door was barely wide enough to cover over the entryway (Sliding doors MUST be wider by at least 1-1/2 to 2 inches on left and right!), and the person they hired to install it botched the wall and could not make the kit work well at all. They took it down in angst but then they contacted The Barndoorist to see if we could help recover this conundrum.

Northshore Barn Doors does not use these kits. However, some of the door slabs are not so bad, and some of the metal parts (when they use real metal, that is) are ok too. The “candy cane” styled wheel assemblies can be modified in our workshop, new ways to secure them to the door slab are employed, and our steel rail and bracketing system replaces the crappy fake metal kit one with pre-drilled holes requiring a quirky ledger that many people bumble with. We do not need the ledger here! And we added our own hidden floor guide. As a courtesy we patched some wall holes and such, left by the bumbler.

Finally, we can modify/widen doors, and in this case, we used special trim boards to do that nicely, which also served as our signature “side board” feature when installing. These vertical elements mitigate the gap behind the door and clear the baseboard trim correctly.

Chrissy and Adam and their two daughters live in a lovely home just north of Kittery, Maine.

This is a very modern/contemporary style with sleek lines and fine, finished colors and design.

The Barndoorist had specialized in a rustic door style but has done several finished-grade, modern, and contemporary door systems. This one proved to be a fun challenge that involved multiple professionals in our fold, and some interesting features involving sound reduction and hidden wheel systems. The minimalist look is what everyone was after, and we made it happen! See how we rolled it in and positioned it by watching all the vids in this post!

A while ago, Kevin from The Bronx in NY reached out to The Barndoorist to create a custom masterpiece of metal and yesteryear.

Big olde fire doors used to adorn warehouses 100+ years ago and these classics are still in vogue in the right setting. With these buildings now being renovated to retain some of their history and style, folks are wanting this type of metal-clad heavy door for sliders in restaurants, bars, and other cool places all over the country.

Kevin and his crew, who are metal workers (bridges, NYC sky scrapers, and beyond) were renovating such a building and they needed a large door to cover the electrical panel area inside.

Large fire doors had a slant, and huge, heavy-duty wheels and rails, but they were not made as wide as Kevin needed. So, in keeping with custom work and artisan challenges, The Barndoorist made one! We made an LVL frame with a grid inside and the back is black-painted Zip board. Everything is solid-state on this thick door with the tin face. We found the place that still has these aged sections these doors had been made out of since the late 19th century! We crafted special hangers and a custom long angle-iron rail and all the parts for Kevin’s team to come pick it up and install it in New York.

This was built in our shop mostly standing up in place and weighed at least 350lbs if not more. It took 5 guys to put it in his box truck! And, rumor has it that we wrote a big “Go Red Sox” inside the frame —because he’s a NY fan lol

Molli & Jason have a lovely, spacious home in Sharon, MA and they wanted to update the master bedroom closets.

Their local contractor, Matt and his crew designed and built this wonderful full width unit with center bays and two large closets on left and right and the couple asked The Barndoorist for sliding doors in a contemporary style with white paint and a full-length mirror on one closet.

Jason is tall and with limited height due to the top storage area, we came up with the design to make this happen. Finish-grade white framing on thick, solid-state wide doors and a long single rail across the top. We asked Matt to make left and right “posts” in matching white trim boards because sliding doors live in front of entryways and need to “lip” over these when closed to hide gaps. Matt showed us how he had built a solid frame with header up top and we used low-profile hardware and hidden floor guides.

You can see our mockups from the original customer photos to renderings done in Photoshop, and the final results that ‘mirrored’ this plan exactly! Everything went smoothly despite this summer’s heat, and everything is custom! You cannot get this online or in the home center!

Dan in Amesbury needed a small barn door for a hall closet in the family home.
The Barndoorist had reclaimed some, well, white barn door panels that a previous customer had taken out to get something customized by us instead. One of these tall thin and thick white door slabs was perfect for the needs of Dan’s home.

Now the interesting and funny part is how we met: In the winter, The Barndoorist saw a “free” sign on a small table outside Dan’s home. He backed his truck up and took out the mailbox. Feeling compelled to fix this, he stayed in touch with Dan and replaced it in the spring (a temporary one was put up in winter when the ground was frozen). All went well and then Dan said he might need a door inside. This is possibly a new way to market the business! I mean... it worked here hahaha (JK)

Ken and Dee rent a wonderful apartment in Brookline right where all the action is, and they have a daughter.

The family asked The Barndoorist to craft and install a set of Accordion Bypass barn doors that could stack on the right wall behind the TV but also extend left to close an entryway that was 5 feet wide and nearly 8 feet tall.

However, this is a rented apartment and inside the walls are layers of masonry dating back a century.

The Barndoorist came up with an innovative way to solve this: A fully removable system! We made the same finished corner entryway and trim work in the workshop and then built the entire system in a way where only about 8 small holes need to get drilled into the plaster! These, like any marks made in a rented space, can easily be filled should they ever move out. The landlord was on board and her builder met me at the unit on installation day after we showed mockups and project plans.

Posts and a top beam were fastened to the inside frame (the top wood beam even housed some knickknacks and tools!) and barn wood capped these elements as the system went up. A video even shows the “how-to” removal of this entire complex door system when we packed everything up in the workshop to deliver!

Neal and his family from Swampscott, MA had done extensive renovations to expand their 100+ year olde New England home and added a master bedroom in the back upstairs. This room has a spacious bathroom with laundry and it needed a sliding barn door for function and style.

The Barndoorist worked with Neal and his builder, as the space had angled ceilings and required exacting calculations to make it fit just right. We wanted the door to slide to a point where it did not go over the wide decorative casing of the room’s main entryway. But at the same time, it had to be wider than the bathroom entryway, and not wider than that room’s casing.

This is a situation where, when the door is closed, you can still see some of the decorative left and right vertical casing but the door and its added side board features close the space and provide privacy with style.

We used the hidden floor guide and everything worked out wonderfully with a rustic door that had a customized wax coating which close-matched the floor coloring.

Dave and Christine visited The Barndoorist while having their master bedroom renovated and a new closet framed in their historic Dover, New Hampshire home.

With everything in the room being beautiful Cherry furniture, we were asked to create a unique large door and The Barndoorist just so happens to have aged rough-sawn cherry on hand!

We also had to make this door in two sections so it could make it up the stairs and around corners in the old home. Dave helped carry two sections we built in the workshop that, once the top one was hung, would be easily assembled and finished in the room to create the ~50x84 sliding door! The Barndoorist used Zip board as a backer and created sections of the chevron pattern by resawing cherry and some other wood types to create the scene. Then everything was coated with a special mix of Bri-Wax that Dave and Christine asked us to make to close-match the rest of the room.

All of this fit nicely into the space with clearance just under the crown molding, which we tested in our workshop, and the results are wonderful!

Francisco from Natick, MA had The Barndoorist make and install a door years ago, and now the family asked for more doors upstairs.

We were commissioned to make a set of bi-folding barn doors that also met in the middle for a closet space in a small bedroom, and we built and tested this system in our workshop to make sure everything lined up for installing on site. There’s a lot of tweaking and tinkering in systems like these, and while the kits online tout their ease of installation, we found that technical challenges making sure everything lines up from at least three different aspects all at the same time were crucial to its operation. As well, the floor guides must be set just so, and when working on older, non-level floors and non-true and plumb walls or trim work, one needs a bona-fide Barndoorist to ensure proper form and function!

The other system was for a kid’s playroom and this bypass set up worked perfectly for the space. We used our special mounting brackets that make it so one can find “purchase” into the wood in walls where things aren’t always as they seem. Our bypass and other custom hardware is robust and hand-made and welded in the workshop and you cannot get the right parts for this in the home center or anywhere else online.
