It may feel decorative to leave fallen leaves where they land, but doing so can actually smother your grass and block the sunlight and airflow it needs to stay healthy through the winter.

If you can, mulch light layers of dry leaves instead of raking them away. Shredded leaves decompose faster and add valuable organic matter back into your soil—feeding your lawn naturally and helping it come back greener and thicker in spring.

But if your lawn is buried under a heavy layer of whole leaves, it’s best to rake or bag most of them up. A dense, wet blanket of leaves can trap moisture, invite mold, and cause dead patches.
