Since it's storm season, these blog highlights from our archives are a must-read for homeowners and businesses...
THUNDERSTORM PREPAREDNESS TIPS
INDOORS
>Avoid contact with water. Do not bathe, shower, wash dishes, or have any other contact with water during a thunderstorm, since lightning can travel through plumbing.
>Avoid using all electronic equipment. Stop using anything connected to an electrical outlet (computers, laptops, game systems, washers, dryers, stoves, etc.) because lightning can travel through electrical systems, and radio and television reception systems.
>Only use cordless or cellular phones since they are safe to use during a storm—do not use corded phones.
>Avoid contact with concrete floors or walls, as lightning can travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.
OUTDOORS
>Postpone your trip or activity if the weather forecast calls for thunderstorms.
>When thunder roars, go indoors. Find a safe, enclosed shelter such as a home, office, shopping center, or hard-top vehicle with the windows rolled up.
>Find adequate shelter quickly to remove yourself from danger. If there’s no safe shelter nearby, follow these tips to help reduce your risk:
o Immediately get off elevated areas such as hills, mountain ridges, or peaks.
o Never lie flat on the ground. Crouch down in a ball-like position with your head tucked and hands over your ears so that you are down low with minimal contact with the ground.
o Never shelter under an isolated tree.
o Never use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter.
o Immediately get out of and away from ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water.
o Stay away from objects that conduct electricity (i.e., barbed wire fences, power lines, windmills).
>Avoid open structures and spaces such as porches, gazebos, baseball dugouts, sports arenas, golf courses, parks, playgrounds, ponds, lakes, swimming pools, and beaches.
>Avoid tall structures. Since lightning tends to strike the tallest object around, steer clear of telephone poles and trees.
