It should help answer practical questions: Where do groceries come in? Is there a place to set things down? How does the kitchen relate to daily living spaces? What needs privacy, and what should feel connected?

Those everyday relationships often matter more than a single room looking large on a plan. Taking time to think through routines early can lead to better questions before a project moves further into design.

Before starting a home addition or renovation, it helps to separate the things you need from the things you simply like.

Start with three short lists: what must improve, what cannot be compromised, and what questions still need answers. That makes it easier to evaluate the project scope before getting attached to a particular layout or exterior image.

Residential design involves more than making a floor plan fit on paper.

A useful design has to organize how the rooms relate, how the exterior comes together, and how the intended project can be understood by the homeowner and builder.

For custom homes, additions, renovations, and garages, I start with scope and project fit before moving into design development. That intake-first step also helps identify projects that need a different professional or a different path before unnecessary time is spent.

Floor plans and exterior views answer different questions.

A floor plan shows how rooms connect, where circulation occurs, and whether the layout supports daily routines. A perspective helps a homeowner understand the building form, roof shapes, and how the finished project may feel from the outside.

Both matter. A project can look attractive in a rendering while still needing better room relationships—or work well on paper without the exterior feeling resolved.

An in-law suite works best when it is planned as a home within the home—not simply a bedroom added wherever space is available.

This proposed garage conversion considered the relationship between the living area, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, privacy, entry, and the rest of the house. It also had to account for how converting garage space changed parking and storage.

The useful question is not only, “Can this space fit?” It is, “Can someone live here comfortably and independently?”

This is a proposed design concept, not a photograph of completed construction.

A focused addition can sometimes solve a major space problem without pushing the whole house outward.

This proposed primary-suite addition used the area above an existing garage to create a larger private bedroom suite while keeping the home’s overall property relationship intact.

The planning challenge was not simply “add a bedroom.” The design also had to consider privacy, circulation, exterior appearance, and how the new upper-level space connected back to the existing home.

This rendering shows the proposed primary-suite addition over the garage. It is a design image, not a photograph of completed construction.

Storage planning is not just about counting closets.

When comparing house plans, look at where storage is located in relation to everyday routines. Coats, shoes, cleaning supplies, pantry items, seasonal decorations, tools, sports gear, and household overflow all need places that make sense.

A plan can show plenty of square footage and still feel frustrating if storage is far from where items are actually used.

Before choosing a plan, walk through a normal day on paper. Where do things come in? Where do they get used? Where do they need to go when they are not being used?

That simple exercise can reveal whether a layout will support daily life.
