We had EXTREME temperatures this winter. It is the perfect time to schedule an inspection and get all masonry, brick, and stucco checked out. We will be busy this summer doing outdoor repairs so call asap. 215-364-0881

Extreme freezing temperatures damage chimneys primarily through water pe*******on and the freeze-thaw cycle, which causes bricks to crack, flake (spalling), and mortar joints to crumble. Other hazards include ice damming in the flue, increased creosote buildup, thermal shock from rapid temperature changes, and rust.

Common Damages and Signs
Spalling: The freezing and thawing of moisture inside bricks causes the masonry face to break, flake, or chip off.
Cracked/Decaying Mortar: Water trapped in the mortar freezes and expands, causing cracks and gaps between bricks.
Structural Damage: The chimney may shift, lean, or pull away from the house, indicating a severe hazard.
Chimney Crown Damage: The top concrete slab (crown) can crack, allowing water to enter the structure.
Blockages: Freezing rain or ice can seal the flue, preventing proper ventilation.
Interior Damage: Water can cause stains on walls/ceilings, rust on components, or a musty smell.

Winter chimney maintenance is critical for preventing fires caused by creosote buildup. While ideally done in the fall, cleaning can be performed during winter to maintain safety and efficiency.

Essential Winter Chimney Tips

Burn Seasoned Wood Only: Use dry wood with less than 20% moisture to reduce flammable creosote accumulation.

Install a Chimney Cap: A cap prevents snow, ice, and debris from causing moisture damage or drafts.

Monitor the Damper: Ensure it seals tightly when the fireplace is not in use to block cold air from entering your home.

Signs You Need a Mid-Winter Cleaning

If you notice any of these "red flags," stop using your fireplace and seek professional service immediately:

Strong, smoky, or musty odors.

Poor drafting (smoke backing into the room).

Black, oily soot or "glassy" tar-like buildup inside the flue.

Visible cracks in the masonry or chimney liner.
