May was lovely and very very busy!!! Updates below 👇🏽

Seedlings are in the ground with a few more to be planted out now that the weather has warmed up! There’s still a lot to do but it’s nice to see lush greenery again and a few early blooms!

The farm stand took a little break the end of May but it will be fully stocked with fresh and dried herbs, flowers, medicinal products and some produce soon!

Our markets start in June so keep an eye out for that schedule coming soon! We will be par of the Southwest Harbor Farmer Market happening every Friday morning!

Spring was slow but summer is on the way friends! Happy growing🌿

When you grow your own food you start to realize 1. How much we waste and 2. How much work it can be to preserve your harvest!

This herb salt is so so easy and is a great way to help use up excess herbs and edible foliage from your garden. I usually make this in the early summer and then right about now when I’m exhausted from harvests and need to trim back my herbs to avoid flowering. So what do I do? I go around trimming back herbs, wash them and through them in the food processor with sea salt and throw it on a pan to dry out over a week or two.

Herbs I like to use:
Rosemary, thyme, oregano, dill, fennel tops, nasturtium leaves/flowers, basil (let it wilt for a day or so first to get our excess moisture, parsley, celery leaves…. You get the idea.

Soil is arguably one of the most important parts of your garden… like a house… it is your foundation! Understanding the type of soil you have and investing in high quality amendments is truly key to your success.

A little back story: I recently moved this past year to a more rural part of Maine, I didn’t really know who were the best vendors and what I could trust so I experimented… and well you saw what happened 🥲

How to avoid my mistake👇🏽

- ask questions!!! A good retailer knows about their products, where they come from and what you can expect. Do your research on what you need for your specific space before and ask them what they recommend and why. If they don’t know or dismiss your questions maybe shop around a bit more.

- even bagged soil, mulch, manure etc can be problematic! Again…do your research on the brands available and what people are saying about it online. I won’t name names but I know of a few prominent brands that have had quality and pest issues as they’ve grown their businesses over the years

- shop as local as possible🫶🏽 this will likely limit any crazy invasive plant or pest issues from spreading. Since this laps in judgement I’ve gotten to know my local suppliers! I trust what they provide is high quality and I can count on it being consistent throughout the season.
