Set this new Hisense mini split out back yesterday, up on a hurricane pad so it stays put when the next storm rolls through. These are a great fix for that one room that's never comfortable, like a bonus room over the garage or a back bedroom the main system just can't keep up with. And a lot of folks don't realize they heat too, so come January you just switch the remote over to heat instead of dragging out a space heater. Here's one we pulled out of an outside unit last week. The fan motor was pulling way more amps than it should, so our tech swapped in a new one under warranty. Since a lot of y'all run heat pumps, that outside fan is working all winter too, so every now and then walk out there while the heat's running and give it a listen. A grinding or squealing sound, or a fan that's crawling along slower than normal, usually means the motor's on its way out, and catching it early beats losing your heat on a cold night. Anybody else's outside unit start making new noises lately? 👂

Finished up a maintenance visit on this one yesterday, and it's running great heading into the cooler weather. One thing our tech always does on these visits is clear and treat the drain line, because around here that little pipe clogs up more than just about anything else. If you want to help it out between visits, pour a cup of plain white vinegar into the cleanout on the drain line by your indoor unit every couple of months and it'll keep the gunk from building up. Anybody ever had a clogged drain shut the AC off or drip through the ceiling? 😬

Swapped out a few old thermostats for these new Honeywell smart ones at a business here on the Eastern Shore last week. My favorite part is that little number at the bottom of the screen, because that's your indoor humidity. Around here you want it sitting somewhere in the 40s to low 50s, and if yours keeps creeping up toward 60 you'll feel sticky even at 72 and might start smelling something musty. A lot of times the culprit is the fan being set to On instead of Auto, which blows the moisture right back off the coil and into the house. Anybody actually know what their house usually sits at? 💧

Got a "not cooling" call yesterday from a business here on the Eastern Shore. Turned out the blower motor had quit, so there was nothing moving air through the building. Our tech put in a new motor and relay, cleared out the condensate drains while he was in there, and checked the heat strips and heat pumps so they're ready when it turns cold. They were back up and running before he left. If your system sounds like it's running but you're barely feeling air at the vents, that's worth a call at (251) 225-4035. Anybody else's AC pick this week to act up? 😅

Gave this air handler a once-over during a maintenance visit last week, checking amp draws on the blower and heat strips before it turns cold. Quick heads up for that first chilly night when you flip the heat on: a burning dust smell for 10 or 15 minutes is normal, it's just a summer's worth of dust cooking off. If it hangs around longer than that, or smells more like hot plastic or wires, shut it off and give us a call at (251) 225-4035. So who's already caved and turned the heat on this week? 🥶

Here's what it looks like when we're chasing down a "not cooling" call, meter clamped on and checking amps. Before you call anybody though, take a quick look at your thermostat to make sure it's set to Cool with the fan on Auto, then check the breaker out in the garage. You'd be surprised how many of these turn out to be a tripped breaker after a storm or a thermostat somebody bumped while dusting. If it's still blowing warm after that, give us a shout at (251) 225-4035. Anybody ever paid for a service call that turned out to be the thermostat? 😂

Wrapped up a new heat pump install yesterday, and this air handler's all set in its closet before the walls go back up. Since a lot of y'all have heat pumps around here, one heads-up before the first cold snap: if you see the outside unit steaming or it goes quiet with the fan off for a few minutes, that's usually just the defrost cycle doing its thing. Now if it's covered in solid ice and stays that way for hours, that's when you call us at (251) 225-4035. Who's got a heat pump and who's still on gas heat? 🔥

How custom is this Kiva Dunes home? Before the concrete was poured, we ran PVC out to where the slab ends so we could bring our duct up to this grille. We sized the diffuser to handle the heat load from all these windows, so the homeowners can enjoy the water view from this room and stay comfortable all day without getting blasted by heat.

Got a call last week right after that storm blew through. The cap had come clean off this roof vent, and the homeowner wanted to know what it'd take to get it back on. Honest answer, that's a roofer's job and not ours, so our tech threw some plastic over the hole to keep the rain out and pointed them to a good roofer. If a storm rolls through your neighborhood, it's worth walking out in the yard and eyeballing your roof vents, because a missing cap lets water straight into the attic. Anybody else lose shingles or a vent in that one? 🌧️
