The PFI CooperTen Scholarship Application will be opening soon for forestry students seeking an exciting internship experience in Summer 2026!

Launched last year, the CooperTen Scholarship provides a forestry student the opportunity to:
▶️ Work with ACF member firms across two or more regions of the U.S.
▶️ Gain a broad range of consulting forestry experience
▶️ Receive support for lodging and travel expenses

This is a unique opportunity to explore the consulting forestry profession, build connections nationwide, and take the first step toward a consulting forestry career.

How do disturbances like fire, canopy gap openings, and deer browsing affect the underground seed bank that shapes the future of the forest? A new study offers some insights from a hardwood forest of oak, maple, cherry, beech, and birch in West Virginia. Of the three disturbance types studied, low-intensity prescribed fire was the most important for increasing the density and diversity of viable seeds in the soil.

Once fire was back on the landscape, the presence of both canopy gaps and deer resulted in the most diverse seed bank. Canopy gaps without deer led to an abundance of shrub seeds but a less diverse seed bank overall.

These results show that land stewards can strategically combine different disturbances to guide woodlands toward a healthy future. What disturbances—intentional or unintentional—have you seen on your land lately?

The Wisconsin DNR, in conjunction with the National Weather Service, has issued a Red Flag Warning for today, Sunday, May 11, 2025 from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. for the following counties in northern Wisconsin:

Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marinette, Oneida, Polk, Price, Rusk, Sawyer, St. Croix, Vilas and Washburn counties.

A Red Flag Warning is issued when a variety of weather factors come together to create especially dangerous wildland fire conditions. Hot temperatures, very low humidity, gusty winds and exceptionally dry fuels from ongoing lack of precipitation are anticipated and can result in catastrophic fires.

The DNR will prohibit burning with all DNR-issued burn permits where the DNR has burn restriction authority. The DNR is asking the public to be especially careful with any activities that could potentially lead to a wildland fire and check any fires from recent days to make sure they have been properly extinguished.

Fire control officials will be on high alert across the entire state, pre-positioning equipment for rapid response and checking any fires from previous days. The DNR anticipates continued dry, elevated fire conditions again on Monday with a chance of some moderating conditions later in the week.
