What Is Actually Happening Under Every Tree in Your Yard 🌳
Most tree care advice focuses on what you can see — the canopy, the bark, the branches. The biology that determines whether a tree thrives or declines over decades lives in the structures most people never think about.
🌳 The drip line — The edge of the canopy is not just a visual boundary. The feeder roots that actually absorb water and nutrients are concentrated in a ring directly beneath the drip line, not at the trunk. Fertiliser, water, and aeration work performed at the trunk base largely miss the active root zone. Work at the drip line.
🌳 The cambium layer — A single layer of living cells, only a few cells thick, sitting directly beneath the bark. This is the only part of a trunk or branch that is alive. All growth, wound healing, and nutrient transport in the bark depends on this layer. Any cut, wound, or injury that damages the cambium is permanent — the tissue cannot regenerate.
🌳 The root collar — Where the trunk flares into the root system at soil level. This zone must be exposed to air. Trees planted too deep, or surrounded by mulch volcanoes that bury the root collar, develop bark decay and root girdling that kills trees over 10 to 20 years — often without any visible above-ground symptoms until collapse.
🌳 The mycorrhizal network — Fine fungal threads that form a symbiotic relationship with feeder roots, dramatically extending the root system's ability to access water and mineral nutrients beyond what the roots alone can reach. Broad-spectrum fungicides and synthetic nitrogen fertilisers applied in excess damage or eliminate this network.
🌳 The correct mulch ring — 2 to 3 inches deep, extending to the drip line, with a 6-inch gap around the trunk. Not the mulch volcano common in commercial landscapes — that slowly kills trees.
