❄️ It's no secret that temperatures have been extremely cold lately...and when cold weather sets in, it's always a good time to verify that your home has adequate attic insulation. After all, having enough insulation in your attic can greatly impact your home's performance--especially in extreme temperatures. Extended periods of extreme temperatures also most commonly reveal shortcomings with a home's heating or cooling performance.

πŸ’‘ Some of the major warning signs of inadequate insulation are:
1. Heating & cooling bills are high
2. Rooms in the house are drafty/chilly or uncomfortably warm
3. Furnace or air conditioner runs frequently/constantly
4. Outside noise is audible inside the house
5. Snow melts quickly off the roof
6. Icicles and ice damming occur on the roof

πŸ“ The best way to confirm if you need additional insulation is to measure the depth of the insulation already in your attic. If there is less than R-49 (19 inches of blown fiberglass or 12-13 inches of blown in cellulose), your home could greatly benefit from additional insulation in your attic.

🫣 And, if you're in the position where your attic could use some TLC (aka an insulation touch-up), know that you're not alone. Statistics estimate nearly 80-90% of homes in the United States are underinsulated! While that may be a staggering data point, it can hopefully assure you that the problem is not as uncommon as you might think--and usually, it takes stretches of extreme temperatures to truly expose that reality.

😎 That's right! All Nu-Wool Premium Cellulose Insulation installers are certified by Nu-Wool. Long gone are the days of hoping your contractor knows what they're doing, because by using Nu-Wool Certified Installers, you can have full confidence in their ability to do a job well done!

This also benefits the installer by ensuring they're set up for success on every job site!

βœ… In addition to this, Nu-Wool offers a 10-Year Energy Guarantee for all new home insulation jobs completed by our certified installers! Nu-Wool is the only insulation manufacturer to offer a guarantee like that without any additional cost. But, because we know for certain the quality of work our installers provide and the quality of our product, we have full confidence in offering that guarantee.

This is why you should air seal your attic. This is a finished house looking into an interior partition wall. Someone missed it with fire caulking. But it’s amazing how you can see light at the right angle comming through outlets.

😷 Unlike other insulation types that require the use of masks and other protective equipment, cellulose does NOT require masks during installation according to the safety data sheets (SDS). Why? Because it's a nontoxic material!

πŸ˜Άβ€πŸŒ«οΈ It's true that OSHA does set levels for the amount of dust allowed to be safely in the air. We at Nu-Wool do support the OSHA suggestion of wearing a N95 dust mask in environments that are high in airborne dust levels.

βœ… However, our installers are fully briefed in OSHA policy and understand the airborne dust threshold. All of them carry N95 dust masks for use on job sites when the threshold is met. Though, it is not a requirement to wear a mask if the level of dust in the air is below the limit outlined by OSHA.

🀷 It's also true that some people prefer to wear masks during an install job regardless of the measurable dust levels for a variety of reasons. Most often if they have a dust allergy, sensitive lungs, asthma, or other pre-existing respiratory issues.

πŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈ But at the end of the day, each job site is different and our installers are fully trained in proper safety protocol and use their professional discretion to ensure a safe working environment. Again, the use of a mask isn't an SDS requirement, but for job sites with particularly high dust levels, it is suggested that masks are used. So, if an installer chooses not to wear a mask, it's not a safety violation, and it's safe to assume the airborne dust level is below the OSHA threshold.

❗️ With cellulose insulation, the use of a mask is more or less for nuisance, not for toxicity or harm. In other words, dust may be annoying or irritating, but it's not directly harmful or toxic to the human body like other insulation materials are. Same is true of handling cellulose: it's non-irritating and completely safe to handle without the use of protective equipment!

πŸ“„ When people think of cellulose insulation being made from paper, they can naturally tend to think of the paper products they use in their home and what they're good at. Namely, products like paper towels and napkins, which absorb water and liquids well and are perfect for mopping up wet spills.

πŸ’¦ So, there's a misconception that cellulose is also going to be highly absorbent, too. However, the key thing to remember is that a product like paper towel is dry when just sitting on the counter, waiting to do its job. It does not act as a desiccant, which means it does not pull water from the air. Though, its moisture content can change with the humidity--and that is true of cellulose, too.

🏠 As with the woodwork in your home, wood expands and contracts with the seasons. While cellulose insulation doesn't expand and contract like wood, its moisture content does change depending on environmental conditions. This change can actually be a very good thing though, as it helps to manage the water v***r content in your home.

❗️ The test for moisture v***r sorption is simple. An open container is first weighed before being subjected to high humidity. After a period of time, it is weighed again. The maximum allowed weight increase is 15%, and anything higher than that fails the test.
