Low garden walls are one of the most versatile pieces of landscape design. The bluestone-capped stone walls in this backyard manage the grade change between the patio and the lawn while doubling as planting bed edges and extra seating.
Clear transitions between levels give the yard structure and keep the design working together for years.

Fall is a good time to build. The ground is still workable, and finishing before winter means the wall is set and ready for spring.

A well-designed planting bed looks fuller and more interesting than one packed with the same plants.

Designers layer plant heights on purpose. Low ground covers at the front, mid-height perennials or shrubs in the middle, and taller anchors in the back give the bed depth and keep the eye moving through the space.

Without that layering, even a healthy bed can look flat.

Shorter days change how much time you spend outside. By late September, the sun is already setting before dinner, and yards without lighting go dark before the evening is over.

Good landscape lighting extends the hours a yard is usable. Path lights make walkways safer to move through after dark. Uplighting on trees adds depth to the yard after the sun goes down. Warm accent lighting around patios and gathering spaces keeps the evening going long after dusk.

Landscaping Tip:

Late September to early October is prime time to aerate and overseed cool-season lawns in our region. Aeration loosens compacted soil so nutrients can reach the roots, and overseeding fills in thin or bare spots before the growing season winds down.

Done together in early fall, both set the lawn up for stronger growth next year.

Big news from our team! Paul Jester, PLA, ASLA is officially stepping into his role as President-Elect of the Maryland Chapter-American Society of Landscape Architects this week. He'll serve a year as President-Elect before taking on the President role for the 2027-2028 term.

Paul joined J&G in 2014 after completing his Master’s of Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland. He also recently completed his term as President of the Landscape Contractors Association, adding to a strong record of leadership in the field.

Early fall is one of the best planting windows of the year in our region. Soil temperatures stay warm enough to encourage root growth, and cooler air reduces the stress new plants would face in summer heat. With consistent watering and enough time to establish before the ground freezes, most deciduous trees and shrubs come into spring with a stronger root system.
